About Oldham County, KY

We love our home in "Summerfield-By-The-Lake"

Jacki & Jerry Shafer, The Shafer Team Call 502-643-SOLD (7653): Real Estate Agent in Crestwood, KY

It's great having a builder in the family - especially when he is your husband. Jerry is, among his many wonderful talents, an incredible builder. He built our home in Summerfield-By-The-Lake in Crestwood in Oldham County. Located just over the Jefferson/Oldham line, we love it's convenience to Louisville amenities, and right around the corner is our church (Crestwood Baptist Church). We also have a CVS Pharmacy and great neighborhood restaurants just minutes away, and we are eagerly awaiting a new Kroger grocery store (coming soon!). And we're just three minutes from our house to the front door of Starbucks! I just love the smell of a fat-free, sugar-free vanilla latte in the morning!

It was difficult for me in the beginning. We had lived in an older subdivision just north of Crestwood called Borowick Farms. I had gotten used to being surrounded by dense woods and rarely ever seeing a neighbor. We like our neighbors, but must admit that after being with clients all day it's nice to have peace, quiet, privacy, and a sense of space! But we found a great lot in Summerfield that backs up to a meadow, so it feels like we're on multiple acreage. It's not unusual to look out mornings from our sun room and see deer lying down in the meadow behind our home. The sunsets are breathtaking!

Summerfield is a great place to take a walk. The sidewalk meanders around the lake where you can watch the ducks, geese, and even swans lazily paddling around in the water.

Homes in Summerfield range from a low of hi $300's to hi $600's. That number may change if some of the homes presently on the market sell for close to their asking price of up to hi $700's.

Oldham County: A Great Place We Call "Home"

Do you remember the TV show, "ALF" ? The furry alien (last known survivor from the planet Melmac) who crash-landed into the Tanner family's garage? Well, if you remember the sitcom, you'll also remember Mrs. Ochmonek, the nosy next-door neighbor who constantly tried to find out the true identity of Gordon Shumway.

Okay, where am I going with this? Jerry and I had our own Mrs. Ochmonek living next door to us when we lived in Jefferson County. We put up with her constant prying into our business as long as we could, and we put our house up for sale and started taking drives out to Oldham County.

We began what could only be described as a Love Affair with this beautiful county, located just over the line from Louisville's Jefferson County. We discovered, much to our delight, that we could afford to buy some land and build our dream home! We found a densely wooded lot and literally carved out a spot right in the middle where nary a nosy neighbor could be seen or heard! We found Nirvana!

Needing some breathing room was one of two reasons we moved to Oldham County. The other key reason was for the kids. We had heard about Oldham County's award-winning schools and our kids needed to be challenged. The schools were everything we had heard they were, and our kids truly blossomed!

Now, 22 years later, our kids are grown, and so has Oldham County! But our county has not outgrown its charm and its sense of community. We still have long stretches of beautiful horse farms and rolling countryside. But we also now have great restaurants, shopping centers and other amenities we used to have to drive into Louisville to enjoy. Hey, we even have a Starbucks!

I'm so glad to call Oldham County our home. Thank you, Mrs. Ochmonek!

Some things just keep getting better! That's certainly true of our Oldham County Chamber of Commerce.

Jerry and I have been members of this Chamber for many years. I can honestly tell you that it has always been an organization to be proud of, but I just had to take a moment to express my appreciation for the many new (and improved) programs, services, and great events the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce offers today.

Under the leadership of Deana Epperly Karem, who came to us just a few years ago from Greater Louisville, Inc., the Chamber has grown, not only in numbers, but in educational and networking opportunities.

On the calendar this year is a "Back to Business Basics Lunch Series" that gives members an opportunity to hear interesting speakers talking about ways to build and improve our businesses while enjoying lunch and networking with other chamber members.

If you can't get away for lunch, or you just prefer to meet early in the morning, "Breakfast & Biscuits" might be for you. This program offers early birds a chance to network with regional community leaders and benefit from topics ranging from the changing economy, federal programs and services, business growth, issues that directly affect Oldham County and surrounding areas, and much more.

"After Hours In OC" offers networking in a relaxed atmosphere of networking with your fellow Chamber members in a local restaurant/entertainment venue. This three-part series is held at different locations throughout Oldham County, giving restaurants and other attractions a chance to showcase their products and sample their menu.

The Quarterly Dinner has been around for many years, and is always a great way to mingle with other business people from all over the county. We always come away with information we can use to build our business, and it's just a nice atmosphere for getting to know people better over dinner.

And Showcase Oldham County is a much-anticipated event the entire community enjoys each year. The Oldham County Chamber won top honors for this event in 2007. Each year, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives (KCCE) recognizes Chambers from across the state for their efforts in marketing programs, membership recruitment, event planning, leadership development and more. The 2007 event offered a number of new features, including a Home Zone, around-the-clock entertainment, a health screening area and lots of activities for the whole family. This year Showcase Oldham County is scheduled for Friday, March 7 and Saturday March 8, and will be held at the YMCA Soccer Complex in Buckner. This year the event is being sponsored by Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange.

The Annual Golf Scramble is another fabulous way to network with other business leaders while enjoying a great day of golf.

The Chamber hosts other special events and celebrations throughout the year. For the latest listing of programs and events, click here to visit the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce.

Over the years I have worked on several committees, and look forward to getting even more involved in 2008.

The planning and zoning department has been talking to developers & builders for some time out in Oldham County about moving toward mixed-use developments. It appears they are now listening. Neighborhoods like Claymont Springs, Arbor Ridge and Norton Commons are providing a community where people can live, work, dine and attend school all within walking distance. Claymont Springs located in Crestwood, Kentucky has single family homes from the $300's to the $600's, luxury patio homes from $250's, luxury office condos and commercial retail space. They also have a 4 acre nature preserve with fishing pond and walking trails. The entire development is located directly across the street from South Oldham County schools and is only 1 block from the grocery store and post office in Crestwood. I hope to see more developments like these

Hillcrest, like Sutherland, is one of Louisville's larger high-end neighborhoods. Located just across the Oldham Co. line on Highway 42, Hillcrest boasts some large lots, rolling hills and some amazing homes. It's also very close to the Goshen at Hillcrest elementary school which is great for families with small children.
