Richmond KY's Little Biltmore

I grew up on the streets in Richmond Kentucky. We lived on the west end and I used to ride my bicycle to town. My Dad owned a Greyhound Station on Water Street that was totally interesting to hang out in. As I would leisurely ride my bike in the 1960's along Main Street, I would pass by some truly beautiful old historic homes. I would wonder what their lives were like and just who had lived there in the past.

One house that I truly loved to gaze upon was right across the First Christian Church on 419 West Main Street. Back then it was named Westover Terrace Antiques and owned by Mrs. Coy.

When it was built in 1891, it was known as the "Bennett Place" by Mrs. Elizabeth Chenault Bennett. The Cincinnati architect Samuel E. des Jardins built this one and several other historic homes in Richmond.

The Queen Anne style one and a half story brick has Romanesque detailing, a high hipped slate roof complete with a domed turret, a balcony coved grand double door stained glass entrance. Open those doors to a sweeping cherry wrap around staircase that leads to the second story. Gleaming hardwood floors and eight fireplaces enhance the house that has original hand carved mantles and tiles.

Later, it was home many other members of the Bennett family until 1957 then sold to Nay and Farry Coy. Mrs. Coy owned the house till her death and Pam Jones Price inherited the house and sold it to Pat Vencill and Sharron Oxendine that established the Bennett House Bed & Breakfast.

Since 2000 the fabulous Bennett House Bed & Breakfast has been owned and operated by Richard and Rita Smart.

Fast forward to 2008 and out of town guests, locals friends and neighbors all enjoy a plethora of wonderful experiences in this historic Bed & Breakfast. Drawing upon skills as a professional home economist, Rita Smart has offered up a heaping helping of southern charm and hospitality. Her exquisite tastes in Southern décor and attention to detail complement the aroma of baking coming from the kitchen.

Hungry guests wait patiently amid the fine antiques to sample the tasty food whether they are there for Saturday tea, private dinner or attending a little girl's tea party. Many are overnight guests that have enjoyed a good night's sleep in one of the bedrooms or suites and are now ready for breakfast.

The best compliment a good cook gets is when someone wants their recipe. I'm sure Rita has been asked many times for her culinary secrets gathered over the years. So much in fact, she finally put them all together in one place. Rita can now add "famous author" to her resume as she spends time at book signings promoting the Bennett House Cookbook: Kentucky Delights.

Come step back in time and take a moment to enjoy this historic "experience" we have in Richmond, Kentucky. Bennett House Bed & Breakfast, Share it with a good friend or two!

"Life is an experience, where you want to stay, it should be an experience. When you fix food for people...it's the experience." Rita Smart says with a smile.

The Circus Is Coming To Town!

The Circus Is Coming To Town!

A CIRCUS IN MADISON COUNTY??

Imagine...elephants walking down Main Street from a train car to get to the circus grounds.

Well, that won't be happening, but it would be quite a sight!

blog post photo

Yes, you heard that right....THE CIRCUS!

blog post photo

Looks like fun! I'll come back and give you an update.

I can't even remember the last time I ever went to a circus. Years ago, I toured John Barnum's house and Museum in Sarasota Florida. Remember the Barnum & Bailey Circus? It was a BIG deal!

One of the things I thought was awesome at the Barnum house were the banyon trees on the grounds. There was also a place to sit next to the ocean that had odd sized concrete chairs for special members of the troupe. I could just picture the tatooed lady or the smallest man in the world sitting there enjoying some R & R.

This is a different circus but I'm sure there will be plenty of exciting things to see. It's been a long winter and I'm ready for some of that cotton candy... See you there!

How I Survived The Kentucky Ice Storm

Lizette Fitzpatrick - Broker-Realtor® Kentucky Homes - Horse Farms : Real Estate Agent in Lexington, KY

This isn't my usual blog entry.

I can't remember a time where I was awake at 4:00AM and wanted to blog. This is a celebration of electricity...but not at my house.

Chanel and I moved in suddenly yesterday at my Mom's house. She didn't have power either but she did have a gas fireplace.

I seem to have almost lost track of time, but this whole thing started at 2:15PM on Tuesday. I was busy as usual at home on both computers editing pictures and working on a new listing, juggling a short sale, updating files, emailing, blogging....you know all the usual stuff that can roll into a real estate kind of day.

You know that dreaded sound when the electric goes off. A BUZZ...then nothing.

Prior to that, the Direct TV dish had been searching for a signal...not a good sign. Hmmm...I wondered if the sleet and rain had something to do with it? There was a good thick coating on everything outside.

As day went on and I was reading by candlelite after my laptop died, I decide to start preparing for a night without power. I found all my candles, flashlights, power cords and converter box to use my car as the source of power if need be to recharge. I took all food from the freezer and put it on my back porch.

I made it through Tuesday night and the temperature in the house had only dropped about 14 degrees.

Time for breakfast, I pulled the ice covered gas grill out on the deck and fried some bacon and heated water for coffee in my French press. As I worked on breakfast it was still sleeting and then it turned to snow.

I tested out my converter box in my car cigarette lighter. That was working to recharge my phone and flashlight. I carefully opened the garage door manually so I wouldn't die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

My emergency system was all running smoothly till friends started calling (that still had power) wanting to come pick us up for the duration.

Part of your brain says,"I can survive this and make due and the other half says I need electricity to survive."

So I let the friend come get me.

As we drive along with all my thrown together belongings, Chanel is clinging fearfully on top of the pile. All along the road trees are broken and no traffic lights work, cars are stuck here and there. It looks like a war zone.

By the time we make it to the friend's house, I see large trees hanging over power lines all around them. The power is off as soon as we arrive.

My handyman calls to check on me and is in town with his truck. I decide to go to my Mom's house. He stops by to pick me up and off we go. Mom is no camper and didn't even have matches. She did have a gas fireplace! I figured it would be best to help her if I could get over there.

As soon as I arrive, I start getting her organized. I had brought all my power cords, candles, food, and whatever I could think of in 5 minutes in a big bag. Mom was amazed that I was cooking all our gourmet meals on the gas fireplace. I heated water for French press coffee and we were doing pretty well. I ran a cord to her car so we could check out some news on my laptop. I think she missed her TV the worst.

My handyman called again. Now, he was worried that I didn't leave any water on in my house and the pipes might freeze. He wants to come pick me up to go back over there.

As we go into my neighborhood it looks so strange because it is so dark in every house as far as you can see. We go in and get all the water on and I pick up a few more things I forgot. It's odd to see it in the dark by flashlight. I glance at the thermostat and it reads 48. I couldn't have stayed there. Good thing I left.

At about 11PM the lights finally flicker on at Mom's house. Finally, we don't have to camp out. It's somewhat normal but I can't sleep. The couch is uncomfortable and now I'm hot! Too much heat can keep you awake. So...I was awake at 4AM and decided to blog. It's nice to be connected again.

I hope my house has power tomorrow. I heard that work crews from Tennessee and National Guard are here to help. This might take some time.

A shower might feel nice about now!

I'm already Wishing For Spring...as I shovel Snow In Kentucky

Lizette Fitzpatrick - Broker-Realtor® Kentucky Homes - Horse Farms : Real Estate Agent in Lexington, KY

Days like today make me wish for spring! I'm wishing for leaves and blossoms on trees.

This morning was the first time this season that I actually had to find my snow shovel and get busy! It looked to be 2-3 inches of the powdery mess.

My driveway is straight uphill and my car is nothing more than a sled out in the ice and snow.

I must have been the first one out this morning. Not a soul in sight as I methodically scraped and scraped till there was a possibility of attempting the hill.

One good thing about Kentucky is that we don't really get much snow. It's really hard to say exactly what kind of weather we get because it is a mixture of everything and then some.

The next big event will be Groundhog Day for the correct prediction of how many more days of bad weather. Nothing like having an expert opinion on things!

Last night, I was invited along with hundreds of other folks to attend the Grand opening party for the Richmond KY Cinemark at Richmond Centre.

A light snow fall fell on our heads as we anxiously waited on the sidewalk for the doors to open at 6:30PM.

It was the coldest night of the season but it had the feel of a Christmas Eve.

The excitement was contagious as we all shivered in our shoes! Brrrr!

Richmond centre Cinemark

It was really a long line that no one seemed to mind since tickets, popcorn, drinks and a movie of our choice was on the house!

Once inside, we were amazed at the new smell mixed with popcorn and feel of the lavish interior.

We were like kids in a candy store!

The management at Richmond KY Cinemark had really anticipated a large crowd and all the newly hired staff were busy as bees to keep everything flowing properly. They did a great job.

The large common area included the box office, refreshments stand and video arcade.

Richmond centre CinemarkI took these photos later after we had watched our movie. This whole area was jam packed with patrons wall to wall earlier.

We had our pick of twelve movies to watch. It was hard to decide on which one. Dark Knight was the one we chose to view.

The stadium seating of the theater was fabulous! The chairs reclined a bit and there was plenty of leg space between the aisles.

Settled in with our drinks and popcorn, we noticed the screen was curved and seemed to expand outward to view the movie.

Richmond centre CinemarkI was glad I had waited to see Dark Knight. To see Heath Ledger in this movie was bittersweet. Sad that this was his last appearance.

In recent years, I had not followed the Batman series, but this movie was great!

Even better than the Quantum of Solace I saw the other night. Go see Dark Knight if you can.

It's nice to finally have a stadium seating cinema in Richmond Kentucky. Enjoy!
