We all have our ways to simply unwind and relax.
For me, I enjoy taking refuge on the water. There's something soothing and peaceful listening to the sounds of gulls and crashing waves. Watching a sunrise or sunset from the deck of a boat under sail is truly a spiritual experience.
I love living at the interface between water and air, where all is possible. As my white wings unfurl, they harness an unseen force, catapulting me to a destination yet unknown.
One of my favorite past-times is sailing. Perhaps it's more of a passion than a past-time as I don't often get the opportunity to sail much living in Lafayette, LA. We're landlocked here so I often venture to my birth-town, New Orleans, LA to quench my need for some sea legs.
I was recently invited by two school buddies, Jim an Attorney and Ray, a Commercial Real Estate Broker, to make an overnight sail trip. It had been a few years since we had been together. Life has a funny way of doing that to friends separated by physical miles and careers.
We met at Lake Maurepas (pronounced Maw-Ree-Paw), loaded Jim's boat with the necessary essentials and headed out on our adventure. The idea was to navigate the channel from Lake Maurepas into Lake Pontchartrain (pronounced pŏn'chər-trān'), the largest lake in Louisiana and the second largest saltwater lake in the United States.
As dusk approached we entered Lake Pontchatrain. A small storm surfaced exchanging calm seas for rough ones. Our intended cook, Ray, a novice on the high seas, took ill leaving Jim and I hungering for the much anticipated banquet Ray had hoped to prepare in the galley. Captain Jim and I handled the sheets (that's ropes for you land-lubbers), and trimmed the jib and main sail as we navigated towards our intended berth, the Pontchatrain Yacht Club in Mandeville, LA.
We moored safely around midnight, and the rain softly fell. A make-shift meal was hastily eaten and we soon fell asleep to the pitter-patter sounds as the waves gently rocked us into a deep slumber.
