Hammond Helps Birds Harmed by Gulf Oil Spill

Yvonne Martin: Real Estate Agent in Hammond, LA

Egrets are just one species of bird helped at Hammond's Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for birds affected by gulf oil spill.Hammond is helping birds harmed by the gulf oil spill by opening its Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in the old 84 Lumber building (84 Pride Dr, Hammond). It may seem odd to have a bird rescue center located away from the action, so to speak, but its location near the airport and away from possible hurricane zones makes it the perfect place to help clean off and nurse gull, pelicans, egrets and other birds affected by the BP oil spill.

The old 84 Lumber building was chosen because the seven acre property allowed for expansion, if needed. Also, its location so close to the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport but away from the possible distraction of city noise made it the perfect place for these traumatized birds to recover. The former special order bays have now been turned into exam rooms, the warehouse houses the intensive care tents for the birds that are seriously injured and cages are set up around the exterior of the building for the birds that have been cleaned and are waiting to be sent on to their next home.

Right now, the rescue center is treating just over 500 birds. However, it is equipped to help up to 3,000, if necessary. This is only a small portion of the 1643 live and 3271 dead birds found and collected by rescue workers since the oil spill began. Most of these birds have come from Louisiana.

When birds are covered with oil, they have trouble cleaning themselves. If they can't clean themselves, the stress causes them to quit eating or drinking which then leads to dehydration, exhaustion and eventual death. Hypothermia can set in because the oil makes it hard for their internal body temperature to regulate.

Tropical Depression 3 has strengthened a bit and is now Tropical Storm Bonnie. Movement is to the northwest at 14 mph.

Tropical storm warnings remain is in effect for the Florida east coast from Golden Beach southward to the Florida Keys, and for the Florida west coast northward to Bonita Beach. The central and northwestern Bahamas are also under a tropical storm warning.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the Florida east coast from Jupiter Inlet to Golden Beach, including Lake Okeechobee.

Tropical storm conditions are expected over the central and northwest Bahamas overnight and Friday. South Florida and the Keys should experience heavy rain and gusty winds on Friday. Rainfall amounts could exceed 5 inches in parts of southern Florida and the Bahamas.

Impacts on the oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico could begin Friday night and should reach their peak Saturday through early Sunday. Squalls with heavy rain and gusty winds and waves of 6-10 feet may develop by late Saturday and Saturday night.

A tropical low pressure system is getter better organized in the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Thunderstorms continue to develop around the broad area of low pressure as it moves off toward the west between 10 and 15 mph. There is a window of opportunity for this system to develop into a tropical depression before it moves onto the central Mexico coast over the next 24-36 hours.

Heavy rain, flooding and mud slides are possible in central Mexico as the low moves through tonight and Friday.

Typhoon Chanthu made landfall in southern China near Zhanjiang early Thursday morning EDT. Winds were estimated to be near 85 mph as the typhoon moved on shore. The winds should quickly diminish now that the center is on land. Heavy rain and flooding are the main concerns in southern China and northern Vietnam as Chanthu moves farther inland.

Tropical storm set to delay Gulf oil fix

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) – The formation Thursday of a tropical storm looked set to force the evacuation of drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and prolong a three-month environmental and economic nightmare.

Admiral Thad Allen, the former US Coast Guard chief leading the response to the oil spill crisis, had warned that if the looming tropical depression was upgraded to a storm he was likely to pull out the vital rigs.

The National Hurricane Center confirmed the bad news shortly after 2200 GMT, saying winds had strengthened to 40 miles per hour (65 kilometers per hour) and announcing, "Depression becomes tropical storm Bonnie."

Skimming vessels were ordered to port ahead of Allen's decision -- expected at 0100 GMT Friday -- which could see the end-stage operation to plug BP's runaway well delayed from mid-August into September.

Allen decided the cap holding back the torrent of crude for the past week would stay on, providing some respite for those in the Gulf region struggling to cope with the huge economic impact of the disaster.

"Based on the recommendations of Doctor Steven Chu, the Secretary of Energy, and the science team, we have determined that if we have to evacuate the site we are prepared to leave the well capped," Allen said.

There had been fears the cap would have to be opened up or even removed because nobody would be on site to monitor any pressure anomalies in the well or oil seepage on the sea floor.

Allen said the latest forecast showed the storm hitting the area on Saturday morning and passing by some 24 hours later, whipping up high seas that could force vessels, including the drilling rigs, to be evacuated.

"During that time it is very possible that we will have wave heights that would exceed the operation envelope for all platforms," he said.

The storm forced work to be suspended on the casing of the relief well -- which should intercept the damaged well and allow it to be permanently filled in with cement -- to allow a special cap to be inserted to stabilize it.

Once the casing has been finished and fixed in place with cement, which takes up to seven days, officials hope to perform a "static kill" to plug the well by injecting heavy drilling mud and cement through the cap at the top.

The final operation to cement the reservoir once and for all through the relief well would be expected five to seven days after that.

"Obviously that entire process now will be offset by whatever days we lose if we have to detach and move off scene," said Allen, who along with other officials has talked of a 10-12 day delay.

A full-scale evacuation would be a huge blow for local residents who already see efforts to choke off the well as too little too late, with hundreds of miles of coastline already fouled.

The five US states along the Gulf of Mexico could lose 22.7 billion dollars in tourist revenue over the next three years because of the spill, a study showed Thursday.

A vast swath of the Gulf has also been closed to commercial and sport fishing since the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig sank on April 22, two days after an explosion that killed 11 workers.

But US officials reopened Thursday one third of those fishing grounds after no oil was seen in the area for 30 days and tests revealed the fish there were not being polluted.

Oil industry jobs in the region were also hit by President Barack Obama's decision to impose a moratorium on new deepsea drilling -- a move fiercely opposed by local leaders.

If an upper estimate of over four million barrels is confirmed, what is considered one of America's worst ever environmental disasters would also be the biggest accidental oil spill ever.

After three frustrating months marked by several botched attempts to contain the leak, BP finally sealed the well with its new cap last Thursday and no significant amount of oil has entered the sea since.

The Interest Rate Forecast is starting to take shape ... This link is a good read for those interested in our future rate environment (below). Some in the Fed predict an unprecedented 2 year period where the rates stay very low. This is good news for those considering Refi's and HELOCs ... bad for those with CD's or Fixed Rate Investments.

Something every homeowner should ALSO consider is this ... If you are not completely satisfied with your home today (need's renovations, could use larger or smaller home, need extra rooms, more land, less land, need lower house note), why refinance it? Should you not consider selling your existing residence and buying the home that best suits your current needs? True, you may have to settle for a price lower than you may want based on today's market... yet can make-up for that loss when you purchase at a great price based on need. Either way, shouldn't you avoid paying closing costs twice within the next 5 years if you think you may move? Later on, can you be assured to have a better rate period than this...

If your not completely satisfied with your current home, consider that rates will eventually rise and you may miss out on this "perfect timing" event .... the double opportunity of "Great Rates" and "Great Deals" will not last indefinately...
