LORANGER BASEBALL
WOLVES WIN!!!
Loranger defeats Berwick 4-3 in Bi-District Playoffs.
BERWICK—The Loranger Wolves made it two in a row with a 4-3 win over the Panthers Thursday as the Wolves returned to Berwick for the second year in a row for a playoff game. Last season the 5th-ranked Wolves escaped with a 7-6 win and went onto reach the semi-finals before losing to the eventual state champions Parkview Baptist. This year’s squad considered by most to be in a rebuilding year delivered another thriller getting a complete game from starting pitcher “Cat” Catalano and a 3-for-3 performance at the plate from Trevor Gaubert.
“This team has come a long way from where we were back in February,” said Loranger head coach Jason Helmsetter. “Not many folks outside our clubhouse and the parents of our young men expected this group to even make the playoff much less win. We have much work to do to get better, but this young group has already grown up a lot this year.”
The Wolves drew first blood in the top of the first as starting pitcher Brennan Catalano helped his own cause with a hit followed by single by Trevor Gaubert that advanced Jeryl Brazil to third who was running for Catalano. Brazil then took it to the house from third taking advantage of a Berwick throwing error.
The Loranger bats went silent for the next two innings, but Catalano blanked the Panthers keeping them off the board. Catalano would finish the night with four strikeouts, while giving up two walks and four hits.
In the fourth, the Wolves bats came alive again as Loranger plated two runs to extend their margin to 3-0. Gaubert led off with a double followed by a walk by Taylor Abrams. Alan Mizell laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Austin Fandal was next delivering an RBI single to score Gaubert and Trent Lott smacked a sacrifice fly to right field to score Abrams.
The Wolves added what would be the winning run in the top of the fifth as Jacob Magiolo hit a two-out double and scored. Gaubert worked the count for a walk to advance Magiolo to second and Abrams was hit by a pitch to send him to third. Mizell drew the RBI walk that scored Magiolo.
Loranger will return home to host Brusly Tuesday with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.

showed Loranger at 19.11 and Albany at 19.94. Both teams will await the playoff pairings set for release next week.
“You always want to play all the district games, but weather was definitely a challenge for both teams tonight,” said Loranger head coach Jason Helmsetter. “We are glad to get out with a win and now we have to prepare for the playoffs.”
The Wolves set the tone early in the rain-soaked affair as Gilbert Boudreaux smacked a lead-off home run in the top of the first. Loranger would plate two more as Jacob Magliolo earned a walk and Brennan Catalano singled to put two on board. Trevor Gaubert followed with an RBI single and Taylor Abrams hit a sacrifice fly to put the Wolves up 3-0.
Independence answered with three runs in the bottom of the first taking advantage of a pair of Loranger errors and an RBI double by Seth Burkhalter and an RBI single by Andrew Colin. The Tigers would send nine batters to the plate in the inning, but stranded three as Loranger starting pitcher Brad Childress fanned the final Independence batter with the bases loaded.
Loranger broke the 3-all tie in the top of the second using a one-out single by Boudreaux and three consecutive walks to score the first of four runs. Austin Fandal delivered the big blow for the Wolves hitting a double to score two and Trent Lott was plunked by a pitch to push across another run.
With weather conditions favoring both offenses, the Wolves managed a rare feat sending the Tigers down in order in the bottom half of the second. The Loranger offense responded adding five more runs to pad their advantage. Boudreaux and Magliolo led off with consecutive walks and stole second and third on a passed ball. Catalano was next smacking a hard liner that was missed in the infield scoring two. Gaubert followed with a free pass and promptly stole second sending Catalano to third. Abrams delivered a single scoring Catalano and Alan Mizell plated two more on a single before the side was retired.
The Tigers add a final run in the bottom of the third as Marc Smith worked the count for a lead-off walk, stole second and reached third on a fielder’s choice Ryan Petite followed delivering a ground out that sent Smith home. The game was called after three due to weather.

“The guys did a great job at the plate and kept the pressure on from start to finish,” said Loranger head coach Jason Helmsetter. “We lost a little focus in the final inning and kicked a few balls around, but the guys did what was expected and I was pleased with the effort.”
The first inning saw both teams send only four batters to the plate before the side was retired, but what appeared to be shaping up as a fast-moving defensive game proved false in the top of the second as Loranger took advantage of four hits, six walks and a pair of Tiger errors to explode for 11 runs after seeing their first two batters quickly dismissed on ground balls.
