This weekend Lakewood we will be hosting The Mackel - The Men's Amateur Championship of New Orleans. This is a very prestigious amateur golf championship. I am glad to say we have junior golfers competing, we also have a over 50 division. This championship represents all ages, a celebration of growing golf.

We won't have class tomorrow. However, you are welcome to come out after 12:30 and play The Short Course and practice. I will be here, I am sure I will have a little time to say hello and watch you practice. You can also watch the championship, a good experience to be around a championship.

This week I had the pleasure to give Elise Bradley a golf lesson. She is the number one ranked girl golfer in Louisiana, two time state junior champion and she won the state women's amateur championship. She will be early signing on November 9 a full scholarship to LSU where she will be a freshman next Fall. Pair Noibanchong is playing much better at USM in her freshman year. It looks like Jennifer Nguyen will also be going to USM. I encourage all of you to set goals and have fun following your dreams. We are to help you grow as a golfer.

I would like to thank the Holy Cross Tiger Golf Team for volunteering.

The Kelly Gibson Junior Golf Tour, in partnership with Allstate Sugar Bowl, is proud toannounce that they will be conducting the inaugural Tommy Moore Memorial Junior Golf Championship December 29th and 30th, 2011 at Lakewood Golf Club in New Orleans,Louisiana. The field of the two-day tournament will be comprised of 80-100 boys and girls ages12-18 from throughout the Gulf South Region. The goal is for this championship to become anational event.

Tommy Moore was one of the best junior golfers to ever emerge from the New Orleans area. He was ranked as the #1 junior golfer in the world by Golf Digest magazine in 1980. A very accomplished junior and collegiate golfer, Tommy went on to earn his PGA Tour Card, and won the Nike Tour Boise Open in 1993. Tommy’s father, Dr. John Moore, and Tommy’s son, Mason, are honorary chairmen of the tournament.

Kelly Gibson, also a PGA Tour Professional, grew up playing golf with Tommy Moore in their hometown of New Orleans. As best friends, they traveled the world together while competingon the PGA Tour. Sadly, Tommy died of a rare blood disease in 1998 at the age of 35. “This tournament will pay tribute to the many contributions that Tommy Moore made to the game of golf. Not only did he influence my career and life, but those of many others who knew him. He was a true gentleman of the game,” Kelly said.

Judge Lance Africk, President of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Committee, stated: “The Sugar Bowl Committee is looking forward to working with Lakewood Golf Club and the Kelly Gibson Foundation to welcome a strong group of young golfers to New Orleans this December. It is a great honor for us to pay tribute to Tommy Moore, one of the finest golfers from New Orleans to ever play the game. Our goal is for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial Junior Golf Championship to develop into one of the best junior tournaments in the country.”

“Lakewood's award winning and nationally recognized junior golf program is committed togrowing golf in New Orleans. To be the site of the Tommy Moore Junior Golf Championship presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl is an honor,” said Brad Weaver, PGA Director of Golf at Lakewood Golf Club.

Each year, the Kelly Gibson Junior Golf Tour awards thousands ofdollars in college scholarships to its eligible participants. Scholarships are awarded based oncommunity service, grade point average, and financial need, not golfing ability.
