Inspired by all the home inspectors that blog about snow and ice on roofs.
It's been over seven years since we lived in the New York area and needed to be concerned about the downfalls of snow and ice. Visiting our son, Travis and his fiancee Kristy in Boston brought back all the memories as if it happened yesterday. We exited the baggage area of Logan Airport in Boston
and much to my dismay, the amount of snow around the area was not what I
expected. "What is the big deal about all the snow in Boston?", I thought to myself. "I've seen worst amounts of snow in Monroe, New York when we lived there. One winter we had 17 snowstorms".
We head towards Burlington, where he lives and I start to notice as we exit the highway, huge mounds of snow. As we enter his Fox Hill neighborhood I begin to see the snow mounds getting even larger. Roofs have snow
mounds a couple of feet high. Some homes had icicles hanging from the
gutters and edges of the roof that are as long as 10-12 feet. This has
been one of the worst winters Boston has had in many years.
As new homeowners, Travis and Kristy have encountered the perils of snow and ice
and the damage that can occur. A telltale sign on the ceiling in one
of the bedrooms, a water stain, warns them of a leak somewhere from the
roof. After researching the roof and gutters, Travis googled
everything pertaining to roofs and the quickest, easiest way to
resolve the problem. Now this may not be the best solution but it was
the quickest.
The task involved a ladder, a hatchet, gloves, ski goggles and a helmet. Frank and Travis spent a good part of Saturday making gulleys in the ice, they encountered after removing the snow from the roof. Kristy and Karen filled stockings with pellets of calcium chloride which Travis and Frank placed in the gulleys to keep the ice from forming again. As the snow and ice melt, the gulleys will direct the flow of water away from windows and into the gutters.
It seems everyone in the neighborhood of Fox Hill in Burlington has spent the weekend on their roofs clearing the snow and ice before settling down for the festivies of the Super Bowl. Here in Boston, the next task in Travis and Kristy's house is under way. Frank and Travis
are working on the installation of a surround sound system while Kristy
is in the kitchen getting the chicken wings and homemade pizza ready.
We hope you enjoyed the Super Bowl game everyone wherever you were and whomever you were with.
