32st Annual Snow Row

William Tierney: Real Estate Agent in Cohasset, MA

On Saturday, March 12, 2011 The Hull Life Saving Museum will host The 32nd Annual Snow Row. The race starts at noon with the coxswain’s meeting at 11:30 AM. The event starts at The Windmill Point Boathouse, 185 Main Street, Hull, MA 02043. The event is free to the large number of spectators, and a mere $20 to participate.

The Hull Lifesaving Museum is more than a museum; it is a local institution, a corner stone of the community. It’s an instrumental part of the community, reminding us not only of valuable lessons from our past, but life changing, and life saving, experiences.

The Hull Life Saving Museums’ marquee-rowing race, the Snow Row, will be on Saturday March 12, 2011 at the Windmill Point Boathouse, Hull, MA. The Snow Row covers a 3 3/4 mile triangular course starting off the beach at Windmill Point, continuing around Sheep Island, past the Peddocks Island day marker, and back to shore. Huge crowds gather on the beach beside the museum’s Windmill Point Boathouse to share in the wild, LeMans-style start, unpredictable weather, and one-of-a-kind gathering of gorgeous boats and athletes. Entirely within view of the Boathouse, the event is as much of a thrill for spectators as for participants. A Harbor Express high speed ferry, with boarding at Pemberton Pier, follows the race course, affording spectators an even closer view of the event. It is also a rare opportunity to see, up close, rowers of all ages and their stunning array of wooden pulling boats -- peapods, dories, wherries, whitehalls, ocean shells, kayaks, pilot gigs, captain’s gigs, and Irish currachs. For the tenth year, crews from Cornwall, U.K. will be coming to New England to participate. Youth and adult crews and rowers from all over New England, New York, and along the East Coast will join them.

The race has five boat categories: workboats, livery boats, coxed boats, ocean kayaks, and ocean shells. A few notes to all race participants: 1) all boats must carry PFDs, bailers, and whistles, 2) all coxed boats must pre-register and begin the race bow on the beach, and 3) the HLM Race Committee reserves the right to cancel the race or keep individual boats from setting forth due to weather conditions or rower skill level.

After watching the excitement of the Snow Row’s one-of-a-kind start, come to the Lifesaving Museum, a mile from the boathouse, which will be open throughout the day with free admission. The museum is a fun place to learn a bit about our maritime history. Weekend Ferry Service from Boston to Hull to Resume?

William Tierney: Real Estate Agent in Cohasset, MA

Weekend Ferry service may return to Hull, MA’s Nantasket Beach this summer.

Service would run between Boson's Long Wharf and Steamboat Wharf in Hull. Water Transportation Alternatives Inc., which does business as Boston’s Best Cruises, was the sole bidder on a request from the Town of Hull for ferry service runs between Steamboat Wharf in Hull, MA and Long Wharf in Boston, MA. Steamboat Wharf is located on the Bay side of Hull just across from the Paragon Carousel and next to the famed Jake's Seafood & Restaurant. This is a short walk to Nantasket Beach, and the many good eating establishments along Hull Shore Drive. Last year Hull attempted to restore a summer ferry service to Nantasket Beach but efforts failed. I for one, commend The Town of Hull for attempting to restore the service as it will only help many local businesses. The town won a three-year, $110,000 federal grant to pay for the revived ferry service as part of a nationwide effort to offer alternatives to automobile travel. An estimated 500,000 people visit Nantasket Beach in Hull each summer. As of yet, a decision of whether or not to accept the bid from Water Transportations Alternatives, Inc. has not been made. Let's all hope it gets the green light.

Hull Sold Single Family Homes Stats for Dec. 2010

William Tierney: Real Estate Agent in Cohasset, MA

Well the Hull Single Family housing market showed some mixed, yet fairly positive, results for the last month of 2010! December saw seven homes sell which equals the same number of single family homes that sold in the same period in the prior year of 2009. However the average selling price dropped from $374,057 in Dec. '09 to $219,771 this past December. Not to add insult to injury, but the median sales prices slid as well with the median price falling from $354,000 to roughly $250,000 year over year. However time on the market did shorten from a 148 days to 136. The take away here is the volume and the time needed to sell have improved, but pricing is still a key variable.
