Medford, Massachusetts July 2009 Market Report

Over the last few months there has been a real uptick in sales in and around Medford. Inventories are low in the lower price ranges for properties that are not bank owned or short sales.

Because of the lack of regular sale properties prices in the lower ranges are trending up if the current demand continues.

Financing continues to be a closely monitored issue with appraisals and lack of recent comparable properties for regular sales. Buyers & sellers will need to pay special attention to mortgage contingencies over the next several months for buyers wishing to use the Federal $8,000 tax credit with the deadline approaching and the new mortgage disclosure rules & potential appraisal backlog as well as mortgage processing delays.

Medford Point of Interest - The Fannie Farmer Home Site

On my way home from work the other day I saw this marker on the corner of Paris St. & Salem St. (Rt. 60) here in Medford. It marks the Fannie Farmer Home Site. Medford has alot of historical significance and it's one of those things you might pass by hundreds of times and not even notice.

The Medford Historical Society was great to add alot of information to the marker, it reads;

"Fannie Merritt Farmer (1857 - 1915) lived in a duplex house which stood on this site until destroyed by fire in 1979. The Farmer family owned the house throughout her lifetime. Fannie moved to Medford as a child and attended Medford Public Schools and the Unitarian Church. At the age of 13 the readheaded student became paralyzed from the waist down and dropped out of Medford High School. She eventually recovered but always retained a limp. She was confined to a wheelchair the last seven years of her life. Fannie Farmer always considered Medford her home.

She graduated the Boston Cooking School in 1889 and became it's director in 1891. In 1896 she edited the wold famous "Boston Cooking School Cookbook". Otherwise known as the "Bride's Bible". In 1902 she opened "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery".

Called "The Mother of Level Measurement", she was most proud of her introduction into cooking of exact measurement.

After her death her heirs allowed Fannie Farmer's name to be associated with quality candies by the "Fanny Farmer Candy Shops, Inc" "

Sometime your driving down Salem St. Medford, stop by Artery Locks on the corner of Paris St. the marker is on the near corner.

1. Tufts Pool, 449 Main St. in Medford, opens for the summer season on June 29

2. Open swim hours, family swim hours, and adult swim hours are available. Certified Lifeguards are on duty during all hours of operation

3. A Tufts Pool Photo ID is required to swim at the pool.

4. These Photo ID's are issued at the Pool on Main St. The cost for the ID is $20.00 per person. Anyone over 3 years of age must have the Photo ID. A family, all from the same address, that comes to the pool at the same time, will pay a maximum of $60.00. Pictures are taken at the pool at the time of sign up.

5. Starting on June 15, Photo ID Passes are available from 6 - 8:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at the Pool. Passes are also available on Saturday mornings from 10-12:30 AM. at the pool.

6. Swimming Lessons are available at the pool. There are two sessions on weekday mornings during the summer. Contact Mark Smith, Recreation Dept., at City Hall for details. Information and sign ups are available at the pool.

7. Parking is available on street or in back of the school, next door.
