365 things to do in Worcester County - visit Rutland Bison Farm. Yes, we actually have a Bison Farm in Rutland! Is that cool or what? The farm is located on 80 Hillside Rd. in Rutland. Ok, so their not the cuddly domesticated animals we would like them to be, but they are beautiful, regal, mammals and they are living her in Worcester County at Alta Vista Farm.

I had an opportunity to visit with the owner, Nancy Mann and she gave me a personal interview for 365 things to do in Worcester County - visit Rutland Bison Farm. The farm started in 1968 and the store I visited has been around for 16 years. The store sells bison meat and native American Handy crafts. One item caught my eye, a large bin of smoked bison bones. Well, my pup was super happy when I came home.

I purchased bison burgers and a bison shank and a bison bone. Nancy was kind enough to explain how to cook the burgers. Did you know that the meat is very lean and should be cooked on lower heat and turned over often so as to seal in the juices.

I reciprocated in kind by giving Nancy my recipe for Borscht (Russian Vegetable Soup) and went home to try out this interesting ingredient. My opinion: The bison burger is the best of what a burger has to offer without the greasy juices. It tastes just like a regular hamburger but leaner. My borscht came out as good as it has ever been and I really could not taste the difference.

My visit to the farm was short and I would love to go back and explore some more. Put that on the list of 365 things to do in Worcester County - visit Rutland Bison Farm.
