FUN FACTS ABOUT KENWOOD
Kenwood’s developers planted the trees in the late 1920s even before the first house was built as Kenwood was created from what was then considered as a far-flung suburb built on the site of a tobacco or dairy farm – depending on whom you believe. To help lure Washingtonians to Kenwood, they built the Kenwood Country Club, to which every homeowner was given membership.
Over 1000 cherry trees grace Kenwood
Calvin Coolidge considered buying one of the model houses as a summer presidential residence, said Beverly, who serves as the community’s unofficial historian. But when Coolidge decided not to run again in 1928, he instead retired to Massachusetts.
Still, Kenwood has drawn its share of local luminaries. During the 1960s, Spiro T. Agnew lived there along with several Cabinet members and Senators.
The Kenwood Country Club has a pleasant 18 hole golf course along River Road and Goldsboro Road. It is reputed to have narrow fairways and greens, well equipped with numerous and challenging hazards!
