If I Were President
If I were President, the first thing I would do is take a shower.
If I were President, I would eat ice cream.
If I were President, I would travel to Germany.
If I were President, I would have a pet dog named Emma.
If I were President, I would pass a law that you wear helmets on bikes.
If I were President, I would help people I know.
Comments: I would love to eat pizza, too.

Mimi's Cafe® bills itself as your "neighborhood bistro" - it does feel like it, too, with its interesting decor, the welcoming ambiance, the good food ("a taste of France") and the decent prices. It's a comfortable place to enjoy with your family - it's casual, small kids are welcome - or good friends. I love going to Mimi's Cafe® in Elkridge, MD. It's located right off Route 175 at the Gateway Overlook Center.
Last week was my friend Rosie's birthday. Rosie has a very special place not in only in my family but in my heart. We met a few years ago when she joined the office I was affiliated with and hit it off right away. We got along so great that our friendship naturally flowed into business as well and I followed her to the family-owned business of Thompson Company Realtors. I can count on Rosie and Rosie can count on me. It's priceless to be working with someone like Rosie.
Rosie has been there for me through the last couple deployments. She's my girls' 'adopted grandmother' and a great confidante .. bad days or good, Rosie is always there for us! Every January around her birthday we try to do something special for her and this year I took her out for dinner at Mimi's - what a wonderful evening we had. Great food, great wine and great conversation. At Mimi's we got the whole package.
Mimi's Cafe® has a nice balanced menu - balanced in that there are plenty of choices for picky eaters like me. I don't eat any meat that comes from 4-legged animals but I never have trouble finding a good dish at Mimi's. As a matter of fact I typically have a hard time deciding between 3 or so choices.. last night I ordered the pistachio-crusted salmon and it was delicious. Rosie opted for the 3-course special - at $13.99 a fabulous price - and enjoyed her salad and fillet of "Soul". Just the bread-pudding, which we shared, could have been a little less sweet ... I have a sweet tooth but this was a little too much even for me. That's okay though, I just had some more of the Mimi's Famous Carrot Raisin Nut Loaf instead.
I've enjoyed Mimi's with the in-laws & my parents, with hubby and the girls and now with Rosie - I had a great evening every time and I'm looking forward to the next! (*now I can't get that pistachio-crusted salmon out of my head .. I may have to return sooner rather than later*)

'Twas the week before Christmas
and all through the town
Santa's firetruck was wailing
for all the children to come 'round!

Every Christmas season the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department gives Santa and Mrs. Claus a lift around town. Their schedule is never known thus you have to listen for the sirens. A couple false alarms are a given and you can see all the kids running outside whenever a firetruck goes by during December!
Besides handing out candy and spreading some Christmas cheer they are also collecting canned food, which kicks off the Elkridge VFD annual Holdiay Food Drive, and wrapped gifts for needy children.
Donations can also be dropped off at the station: 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, MD 21075.

The Rockburn Heritage Center:
restoration and deterioration side by side
Pfeiffer's Corner School is a 19th century 1-room schoolhouse. Since 2003 the school has been sitting across the street from Rockburn Elementary School in Elkridge, MD. It was moved to its present location at Rockburn Branch Park and restored. Pfeiffer's Corner School is a significant piece of local history and well worth the preservation efforts. Today it is used for educational purposes - What was school like in 19th Century Howard County?
Pfeiffer's Corner School is one of three historical buildings that make up the Rockburn Heritage Center. Clover Hill, a building from the late 18th century, looks neglected and in seriously bad condition. One can only hope that a restoration is in its future - to raise awareness the Howard County Preservation Society placed it on its 2011 list of Top Ten Endangered Historic Sites in the County.
The Bank Barn on the other hand has been restored but looks a little forlorn by itself and without a commemorative plaque.
The Rockburn Heritage Center has a lot of potential BUT funding and a clear vision seems to be a major obstacle. If not overcome sometime in the near future, there wont be much left to save of Clover Hill. What a shame that would be!
