You will never have to pay to be listed as a top neighbor. Period. That important detail clarified, let's discuss how we arrive at two "top neighbors" for a given region:
Localism is a bustling collection of hyper-local communities, and the top neighbors should reflect those members who are most active. When ranking users in a given region, several factors are considered. To get your foot in the proverbial door, you need to have posted at least one "Localism" article or photo for the region.
The very best way to quickly rise to #1 is to post high-quality local content. Keeping a steady strem of incoming posts and photos will massively tilt the scales in your favor.
What doesn't count toward the top neighbor ranking? ActiveRain points and community sponsorships. The top neighbor spots will always go to the most active members in a region. We want to create a level playing field that encourages the growth of communities — talent and dedication are required to win the day.
During the process of inspections on a their (hopefully) new home in Ellicott City, my Buyers required a Termite Inspection. Our trusted friend at Superior Pest Management, Ken Kovak came out to meet us.
Ken is a person that The McIntire Team have worked with for quite some time, he is always reliable and efficient and knows his job well. This particular day was probably not on his favorites list. The home in question had 2 crawl spaces. Ken, not a youngster and not looking like he missed any meals lately, rolled up his sleeves and got down (well across) to business.
It
has been quite a few years since I spent evenings and weekends viewing
all of the homes in Ellicott
City with this great family. All they wanted was a Rancher
in a great Ellicott City school district
with a terrific yard for their two little boys. The oldest son was 4
and knew the name of every dinosaur that ever walked and the youngest
son was 3 with the name of every "Thomas the Tank Engine" train
tipping off of his tongue. (Little did I know that was a rite of
passage that I would watch just a few years later)
When we first visited 3053
HICKORYMEDE COURT in Ellicott City
back in 2003, It was love at first sight for this family. It had all
the warts and cosmetic issues of a home that had been very much lived
in and not updated since it was built. Wall paper as far as the eye
could see only substituted for dark wood paneling in some rooms; shag
carpet in every dull color. Thick in some areas, but seriously bald in
high traffic areas. 2 dated bathrooms in blue and green; A huge
unfinished basement. It was PERFECT.
Fast forward 8 years, an additional child added to to the family and a COMPLETELY NEW HOME
awaits its new homeowners.
It still sits on a lovely quiet cul-de-sac in Valley Mede, It still has
awesome Ellicott City Schools and it still
has a terrific spacious lot next to the wood preserve. Just around the corner is Cypressmede Park
with an abundance of great activities. But that is all. Updates,
additions, renovations and tons of hours of love have been put into
this home. It is unrecognizable and READY
FOR YOUR FAMILY TO MOVE IN.
Here is a letter from the home-owners about their lovely home.
Dear
potential Buyer, thank you for your interest in our
home.This has been
a wonderful house for our family.
We
love sitting on the
front porch in the evening and listening to the spring peepers in the
woods.It’s also
quite beautiful to
watch the sunsets and even thunderstorms as they come through. We sat on the porch as our
sons learned to
ride their bikes in the safety of our quiet cul de sac. After the birth of our third son, the single
level living was very convenient and comfortable. After we relocated the laundry to the main level it was
a breeze to keep up with my growing family.
We
purchased this home eight years ago
and have made many MANY changes. We
removed
all the wallpaper, which was pretty much everywhere in this house. We also removed the wood
paneling in the
family room.We
updated the two
bathrooms that the home was built with and added two more. We also
updated the
kitchen and added the crown moldings and wainscotings. The floor plan of this home is perfect. We are able to watch TV in the Family Room
while not disturbing those sleeping in the bedrooms. The home has also been great for
entertaining.We
have hosted many Fourth
of July parties as well as birthday parties and the occasional
Oktoberfest.Guests
have multiple rooms to enjoy the party
not to mention the large finished basement and the great front porch.
The
schools are incredible.Our
children are very happy with their education. The PTA involvement is huge and
St Johns Lane Elementary School has one of the best May Day festivals
in Howard
County.Our kids
also love Cypressmede
park.It’s a short
walk or bike ride to
enjoy the tennis courts, basketball courts, playgym, walking trails and
baseball field.Every
Thanksgiving
morning we go to the park to join in the neighborhood flag football
game to get
the day off to a good start.
We
hope that you enjoy this home
and all that it has to offer as much as we have.

Howard County offers one of the best school systems in the Nation. This Ellicott City home is districted for St. Johns Lane Elementary, Patapsco Middle School & Mt. Hebron High School.
So why do you want to live in Ellicott City : Rated by Money magazine in 2010 as #2 for the best places to live in America. Howard County has much to offer. Centrally located between Baltimore, Washington DC, and Fort Meade, Howard County had the lowest unemployment rate in the State according to the Howard County website.
