Veterans Day Parade 2011 in Leonardtown, MD

Salute America’s Veterans! The Annual St. Mary’s County Veterans Day Parade in Leonardtown begins at 10 a.m. on Friday November 11, 2011. Parade starts at Ryken High School and proceeds on Fenwick Street to the Town Square, in Leonardtown MD.

See marching bands, military units, bagpipers, scouts, motorcycles, antique cars, horses, dance troupes, and more! A memorial ceremony with placing of wreaths will be held in the Town Square immediately following the parade.

Come to the 64th Annual ST MARY'S COUNTY FAIR SEPTEMBER 23-26, 2010 MARYLAND at the fairgrounds located on Route 5, two miles south of Leonardtown, you will be glad you did.

If you have exhibits take them on Wednesday, September 22. Last year I had the fun of watching five grandchildren prepare and enter: woodwork, knitting, cupcake decorating, painting and Lego building, to name a few.And 'YES' we had some winners! This year Exhibits will be judged from 10AM to 3PM on Thursday, September 23. Exhibit buildings open at 4PM.

Thursday is also "Queen of Tolerance Day" - Gates open at 3PM starting with the Queen of Tolerance Pageant. One young lady from each of the County High Schools competes for the title of Queen of Tolerance. I remember an exciting time several years ago when my daughter represented Chopticon HS.

School and 4-H Activities Day is on Friday, September 24. All elementary, middle and high school students are admitted FREE until 5PM. The Fair is open from 9AM to 9PM.

There are many shows and events including: magic, chain saw sculptures, pig races and St Mary's County Sheriff Department K-9 demonstration.

4-H Activities include: horse an livestock shows and judging contests. Come and see the results of the hard work these young people have done over the last year.

In the Education building you will see a unique display of the talent of St Mary's County school children.

Other events on Friday include: The Speech Contest, a concert by the Middle School Band, and the light weight horse pull.

PARADE DAY is Saturday, September 25. On Saturday there is the 4-H Livestock auction, a jousting tournament and line dancing, some of the previous days events are repeated, live entertainment and the heavyweight horse pull.

Finally Sunday, September 26 is known as Family Day 9AM to 6PM. There's the baby contest and the Gospel music concert, the horse show and other repeated events, along with the antique tractor pull and sheep show, with shearing and weaving. The Carnival offers the "ride all day" for one price ticket.

While you are at the Fair there are many opportunities to broaden your knowledge of St Mary's Agricultural heritage and it's relevance in our lives today.

To make parking easier there is a free STS shuttle bus Fri, Sat, and Sun. from the Government Center in Leonardtown.

OPEN TO ALL RACERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC The Regatta is open to all monohull sailboats 20' and longer. RESERVE your spot by sending in a registration form. The Barnacle Cup Sailors will host the regatta, provide a Race Committee boat and water taxis for the shore-side events.

Schedule of events:

Happy Hour and skippers meeting at Fitzies, starting on Friday night at 1800 hours, September 10th with a reception and cash bar; captain's briefing at 1900 hours.

A shuttle van will be available at the Wharf at 5:45pm.

Sailing -- Potomac River at "HI" Buoy at the mouth of Breton Bay. On Saturday, September 11th at 1200 hours, "round the buoys" race of a length to be determined by conditions. PHRF, non-Spinnaker class boats. This will count as the first in a series of two races.

After the last boat crosses, the RC will start a second PURSUIT race into Breton Bay all the way to Green Buoy 11 near the wharf approximately 6.5nm.

All proceeds from this race benefit the St Mary's Ryken and Leonardtown High School Sailing Teams.
