It's Time for the Annual Deep Creek Dunk!

Do the Dunk at the 11th annual Deep Creek Dunk on Saturday, February 28!
Come on out and "Do the Dunk" alongside the rare breed of thousands of Maryland Dunkers who dare to bare it all each year for the 10,000 athletes of Special Olympics Maryland! For just $50 in pledges, Dunk participants take a quick dip in Deep Creek Lake behind Uno's Bar and Grill to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland, the state's largest year round organization devoted to sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The event is free to spectators, and Dunkers receive the commemorative sweatshirt, group color photo, and the great feeling of freezing your "fur" off for a truly worthy cause! Registration is at noon and the Dunk is at 2 pm, so bring your friends and family and dunk for the Maryland Special Olympics athletes. Long & Foster is proud to be the Official Lodging Sponsor of the Dunk. To register online, please visit www.plunge@somd.org.

The Maryland Special Olympics Winter Games begin on March 1 and run through the 3rd at Wisp Resort. Athletes from counties all over the state eight years of age and older with mental retardation and closely related developmental disabilities participate in events such as snow shoeing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and more.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for citizens with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

February is also a time for a romance and long weekends. It's a great time to come up and visit the Deep Creek Lake area. New communities afford many families the opportunity to make the mountains of western Maryland a place to call their own. We look forward you seeing you soon.

This Month's Recipe: Toffee Brownies

Courtesy of Paula Dean

1 (17.6-ounce) package brownie mix with walnuts

Vegetable oil cooking spray

3 (6-ounce) candy bars with almonds and toffee chips (recommended: Symphony brand)

Prepare the brownie mix according to package directions.

Line a 13 by 9-inch cake pan with aluminum foil and spray with vegetable oil cooking spray. Spoon in half of the brownie batter and smooth with a spatula or the back of a spoon. Place the candy bars side by side on top of the batter. Cover with the remaining batter.

Bake according to package directions. Let cool completely, then lift from the pan using the edges of the foil. This makes it easy to cut the brownies into squares.

Good Morning to all!

I want to share some exciting news, that is on our web site, but that you may not know. In a difficult real estate market, the power of Long and Foster continues to show. With Dave Stevens on board as the new president and CEO, there is renewed energy in our offices. For all of us who have been fortunate to meet Mr. Stevens, we have no doubt that our company will continue to prosper.

Long & Foster Names New President

By Maryann Haggerty

In the midst of the worst real estate market in years, Long & Foster Cos. has promoted David H. Stevens to president and chief operating officer.

Stevens, 51, has a background in finance, not brokerage. Since 2006, when he joined the company, he has been president of Long & Foster Affiliated Businesses, the division that handles mortgage, title and insurance. Before that, he was with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and Freddie Mac.

He replaces Brenda Shipplett, president since 2004. She "has chosen to return to regional management of Long & Foster Real Estate Inc.," according to the company's news release.

Long & Foster, which recently moved to a new headquarters building in Chantilly, is the nation's largest privately owned real estate firm.

Founder P. Wesley Foster Jr. continues at the top of the company he owns, retaining the titles of chairman and chief executive. "The appointment of Dave Stevens to be president of the Long & Foster Cos. is designed to ensure the continued viability of our well-managed and financially stable company during these difficult economic times," Foster said in a statement. "Dave has the financial background and strategic thinking necessary to lead Long & Foster forward into the new reality imposed upon our industry by the nationwide liquidity and credit crisis."
