Calvert County - Scientists' Cliffs House & Garden Tour May 7, 2011 - What a great way to enjoy and learn about historically and architecturally significant properties. The Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage (MHGP) sponsors the tour at Scientist's Cliffs, one of six house and garden tours for spring 2011.

The Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1930 dedicated to the preservation and restoration of architecturally significant properties in the State of Maryland. This year's house and garden tour at Scientist's Cliffs is just one of many great things to do in Calvert County this spring.

Scientist's Cliffs (Scientist's Cliffs available properties) was established in 1935 as a summer colony for scientists by Flippo and Annie Gravatt. The area was chosen due to the population of American Chestnut trees there that showed resistance to the blight. Original cabins in the area were built from American Chestnut (More information on the American Chestnut Land Trust)trees that had died from the blight. The community is located on tall cliffs along the edge of the bay containing one of the world's richest fossil deposits from the Miocene period (source Wikipedia.org). All homes in the community must have a wooden exterior and they are known for their distinctively rustic look.

THREE OUTDOORS EVENTS IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND AUGUST 28, 2010

The weather is supposed to be just right for being outside in Southern Maryland this Saturday.

What is your preference? There's something for everyone.

At the Charles County Fairgrounds you'lll find the Maryland Hunting and Outdoor Expo. This is the fourth year for this event. It includes seminars, contests, tounaments and retriever dog demonstrations. There will even be a display of exotic animals!

In Calvert County, MD you can enjoy the Calvert County Jousting Tournament. Did you know jousting is Marylands state sport?!! Riders of all ages participate. Also included is a church bazaar and boxed meals.

Also in Calvert County is the Bay and Woods Walk hosted by the American Chestnut Land Trust. Take a walk along the Bay with Smithsonian marine biologist Denise Breitburg and Chesapeake Bay Foundation Grassroots Restoration coordinator Marcy Damon, plus a woods walk with Appalachian Trail hiker and naturalist Carolyn Ebel.

No reason to say there's nothing to do this weekend. Southern Maryland is a great place to live.

Calvert County Jousting Tournament. The 144^th Calvert County Jousting Tournament will be held on August 28 at Christ Church located at 3100 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD Route 264. Spectators watch modern day knights attempt to spear three suspended rings while riding a horse at a full gallop. The tournament is organized by skill levels which include novice, amateur, semi-pro, and pro with judges from the Maryland Jousting Tournament Association.

The sport of jousting was made Maryland's official sport in 1962. Jousting tournaments were originally military excercises among nobility during the 10^th to 12^th centuries in Europe- violent contests where the participants speared one another, not exactly a "sport" in the context of sports today. Over time, chivalry prevailed - knights were considered gentlemen. The deaths of nobility brought about the end to man-to-man jousting and eventually evolved into ring jousting.
