One Potato, Two Potato...Under the Kitchen Sink? (proof that I can blog about anything)

Kristen Wheatley | Lewiston/Auburn Maine Real Estate Agent: Real Estate Agent in Auburn, ME

So it is Sunday night and I'm looking under my kitchen sink? Hmmm...no cleaning products under here. Yes I'm one of those frugal people who only use vinegar and baking soda instead of the fancy cleaning products.

Maine PotatoesTruth be told, the space under my kitchen sink is home to canning jars and my stash of Maine potatoes. Now these are not your average grocery store potatoes. These were gleaned from Maine potato fields with permission from the farmer. If you are not familiar with "gleaning," it is when farmers allow you onto their fields to harvest the left over, forgotten, or seemingly unloved potatoes left behind when they have completed their harvest.

Good for the community and good for the farmer. In potato farming you do not want left over "volunteers" popping up the next year.

The most "interesting" spuds seem to get left behind. This was my favorite and measured a whopping ten inches in length. A mutant perhaps, but every bit as yummy as his cousins who ended up at the grocery store.

If you haven't yet heard, Maine seed potatoes have long proven their worth as the best in the country. My favorite place for seed potatoes is in Bridgewater Maine, Wood Prairie Farm. Sorry, Idaho, I saw that statement in a catalog from the turn of the century.

The humble potato is much like Maine, it means so many things to different people. Sometimes overlooked, but often savored in each individuals favorite form. Sliced and fried, sauteed. au gratin'ed, baked, mashed, made into chips, added to soups, or even enjoyed au naturale!

I haven't yet met someone who didn't like SOME form of potato, just as I haven't yet met someone who didn't like some spot in Maine...only those who haven't yet been here.

Ready for my stretch...here it goes...

Potatoes are much like homes, yes HOMES! Even the ones left in the field (on the market) passed their prime, even those that seem malformed or those with a few blemishes...yes even those can find a place with a family. There is a person for every home just as their is a home for every potato. :)

If you feel your home has been sitting on the market too long and you need someone to help you find the right person who wants to buy it, give me a call. Let's get together and make a plan to maximize your homes marketing PO-tential.

P.S.

A certain someone...LISA HICKS, wanted me to write about the resident under my sink prior to this year's potatoes, but my husband cleared it out before I had a chance to snap a photo.

I had placed a couple of leftover new potatoes (on purpose) in an open ziplock bag from a yummy batch I picked up at the farmer's market. My plan was to sprout them for this year's garden. However, I kind of forgot about them and this year's garden did not materialize with the activities of my newly independent career. Thank goodness for local farms!

I was avoiding looking under the sink expecting to find a bag of moldy potatoes, but I braved it one day only to find a HUGE potato vine growing under the sink and wrapped around the plumbing. Who'd a thunk it. Of course Lisa gave me a big DUH for that one, accurately stating "Gee...who'd have thought potatoes would grow in a dark damp place!"
