Getting Up Before 5AM, Making A Gut Wrenching Big Breakfast, Getting Kids To A Maine Potato Field.

Andrew Mooers | Northern Maine Real Estate / Aroostook County Broker: Real Estate Agent in Houlton, ME

For sixteen years, this time of year in Maine as the fall colors appear, as the trees lose their leaves, I have looked forward to getting up early.

Packing lunches and snacks for the kids to munch on to keep going in the Maine potato field. A breakfast of pancakes, sausage or bacon..or omelets to keep their stomachs happy as they fill potato barrels for local farmers for sixty cents a barrel. Fall in Aroostook County is a big deal, an area effort and celebration of the fall spud harvest. The sound of the digger squealing by as it unearths the golden nuggets. A barrel truck throwing off empties that land with a thud behind you as you drag your basket closer to a waiting potato barrel. Hoping you remembered to move your water jug that will get squished between the barrel truck's tires as it hoists filled to the brim barrels for the journey to dark winter storage.

Your thoughts as a kid are what kind of winter coat I'm going to buy. Winter school clothes a destination for much of the money but a portion of the harvest check you can spend on something you really want. Something you saw in the Sear's Christmas catalog. Maybe something from Western Auto for your bike is what I recall when doing the same fall ritual with other kids, my friends on the same "chain gang".

The area farmer needing your help, to pick them clean, to get the crop to the potato storage bins before frost and approaching colder weather arrives as big as life and twice as frightening.

Listening to the Red Sox in a pennant race on the radio. Wearing long underwear in the morning when you can see your breath. Being sweltering hot from the overhead sun and exersion doing the "one potato, two potato...." routine.

This fall all four kids are not in their beds at 69 North Street here in Houlton ME. Two are graduated from college, one in NYC, the other daughter in Boston MA. The two boys in Washington DC and Colorado Springs CO. This is the first fall in sixteen years that no harvest breakfast, no lunches need to be packed with Mountain Dew, Ring Dings, home made sandwiches and other snacks. No ride to the fields or being told by one of the kids as you help set up a section, pick a few barrels to get them started and reliving the smells, sounds, sights as a child reminds you "Dad, don't you have to get to work?" Oh yeah. One more barrel. I always said everything you learn about life, you can trace back to your first job, your entry level apprentice as a migratory field worker, a Maine potato picker.

Cardinal rule number one. No one leaves the field until everyone is picked up. Rule number two, using empty barrels from your section, not helping yourself to your neighbor's empty without permission. Rule number three, using your tickets on your barrels for credit, not replacing anyone else's ticket whether someone is watching or not. Honor in the field. Some days picking thru lunch and breaks to earn the bike you saw in the showroom window. Or others secretly plotting maneuvers to cause the potato digger to break. To shut down to cause a field wide hoop of celebration, a pause from the monotony. Other Maine children rake blueberries, helped family members fish, clam, collect mussels and other sea delicacies from the Maine Atlantic coastal waters. I miss those breakfasts, the packing of lunches, the delivery to and from the Northern Maine potato fields. The two cats know something is up, that the guy running the can opener is a bit quiet, distracted these fall Maine harvest days as the radio announces who is digging today. Who has a one hour delay for the potato house workers, etc. The Maine Potato Picking Video shows the tale of the trek to the field operation.

It's Pitch Black, Raining In Maine, Around Midnight..A Constant Banging On The Back Door Scares You.

Andrew Mooers | Northern Maine Real Estate / Aroostook County Broker: Real Estate Agent in Houlton, ME

My secretary came in this morning saying her sister woke up to banging on the front door around midnight last night.

Her husband is an over the road long haul trucker and gone so her sister with two kids alone at home was frightened. She hoped the banging was a dream and did not get up...just hoping the knocker went away. The persistent back door greeter trotted around to the front door of her Littleton ME country home. Her sister picked up the phone to call the police. The line was dead. All of us have watched enough chiller Stephen King type shows to think "oh oh" if that happened to us in real life. This is not good. Not good at all and thoughts of the line being cut, protecting your kids all swirl around your head at this point. The banging on the front door continues with a determined beat.

A quick check of the dooryard with a motion sensor mercury light that did not activate. It showed no illumination to help her make sense of it all. To prepare for whatever was about to happen. Her heart was in her throat.

She rubbed her eyes, reached for a cell that was not in the bedroom...that was parked on the kitchen table. Where she did not want to take a stroll at this hour, with these conditions to get.

Peeking around the bedroom curtain, the shadow of a car shape in the back yard showed dimly. It looked like a Maine State Police cruiser. She looked from her room toward the front door and could tell the early trick or treater had on a hat...a trooper's hat. Now instead of fearing an intruder, the sick anxious feeling shifts from defending her home to why is there a trooper on my front doorstep at this hour? Thoughts of something has happened to her husband, there's been a fatal accident, etc. Something is wrong with the father of the kids still sleeping in the two bedrooms start churning, whirling. A Maine state trooper in your yard could be along the same lines of a serviceman's parents getting a front door visit from someone else in military fatigues, delivered in person.

Answering the door with her mind racing, the state trooper apologized for the late night stop, but that the maine state police houlton me911 emergency dispatcher had said there were repeated calls on that hot line from this address coming in. And as a trooper serving the public, he had to be determined and knock, try to raise someone inside to find out why. Evidently, water from recent rain had gotten into her outside phone terminal box or line and caused the 911 short circuit. Troop F is the Maine State Police Barracks in Houlton ME.

The kids missed the whole ordeal. Kept sawing logs, counting sheep. The trooper says weather causes this situation to happen more than you would think. Can you imagine a knock "knock knock" at a late hour, your phone line not working and thinking it had been cut..that the worse was about to happen like all those Halloween horror movie releases being previewed like Saw 6, etc on the tube these days?

Maine's First Six Day Moose Hunt Underway...Gun Toting Hunters Invade Aroostook County.

Andrew Mooers | Northern Maine Real Estate / Aroostook County Broker: Real Estate Agent in Houlton, ME

Do you have a large family, have a fall tradition of stalking wild game and filling your freezer with winter maine moose weigh in,houlton maine huntingmeat?

For those lucky enough to get a moose lottery selection, and then to spot the game they came to Aroostook County to take home, fall hunting is a big deal.

If you prefer to get your meat wrapped in cellophane at the local grocery cooler, then hunting game can make you a little queasy, grossed out.

This image from a 770 pound moose my secretary's brother shot in Littleton Maine might not be eye candy or pleasant. But if you grew up with the early morning, big breakfast the the wood's cabin and then off to systematically hunt for Maine deer, black bear, moose, game birds, then it is just part of family tradition.

And if you need another reason or two to justify the hunt beside a family subsidizing their food budget over the winter months, how about thinning the herd means less apt to hit one of these rather large hood ornaments at 55 miles per hour at night?

Not wrecking your car and maybe putting you, a loved on in the hospital or worse. Add to this the revenue generated for the meat processing outfit that cuts, wraps and makes portions designed for your family size at fifty cents per pound. And don't forget the local sporting camp owner who rents you a log cabin, the gas, food, hunting gear you purchase locally. And the state of Maine income from the licenses to help pay for game wardens, hunter safety education. It helps, makes it easier to swallow this image.

Lot of work...dead weight of 770 pounds, to track, drag out of the woods, get processed and tagged and parked in your freezer(s).

That is a lot of hamburger to mix into the sausages, the meatloaf, the casseroles and spaghetti sauces for a few months.

The modern moose hunt over three regular season sessions means 3015 permit holders won the right in a lottery to tramp for Bullwinkle. The first session started Monday September 28th, with 1139 hunters released from the gates to begin their search to bag a moose.  Another 1741 hunters wearing orange hunt from October 12-17th. And 135 end of the line hunters hit the woods November 2-28th to round out the season.

Moose hunting started in 1980 on an experimental basis and for decades, the Maine moose roamed the woods with no fear of being shot at, and fearing only being hit by a vehicle, dying of natural causes. The largest local moose tagged at MAC's trading post in Houlton Maine was 989 pounds. The Maine moose can store over 100 pounds of food in its stomach. It can run 35 mph and can easily swim 10 miles. The moose is the state mammal of Maine. Learn about the Maine Moose Hunting Lottery.
