In the late school year of 2008 about 8 people sat a table in the Beaverton Bowling Alley in Beaverton, Michigan discussing the need to fill a gap at the Beaverton School. These people were not all friends but certainly knew each other and definitely had the common interest of providing our kids the best school experience possible. Sure there was a PTO which provided much needed funds for transporting our kids to field trips and providing necessary and wish list supplies to our classrooms. There is also a Sports Boosters club that provides necessary sporting equipment that enables our kids to compete with the best athletic equipment and on the nicest fields in the best possible conditions. But where is the school spirit? It seemed to fade with each passing year and for the benefit of our kids and the kids not yet in school and the many generations to come, spirit in their school and community is vitally necessary. So, this well meaning group of parents formed the Beaverton Spirit Club and received the blessing from school administration to proceed in the Middle School with the 4th through 8th graders. Our mission is to:
Encourage & Instill Spirit & Pride in Both School & Community Through the Parents & Yourth of Beaverton Middle School!
We want our kids to be excited about school and to learn how to encourage their fellow classmates and friends and be proud of their community. I believe that we all felt that if we intill this now it will help to form adults who become a positive member of whichever community they call home in the future. Of course this message of having Spirit and Pride is sent subtely to the kids through the fun events we have hosted for them and that we will continue to host.
Our first Spirit Club event was a Welcome Back to school on the first day. We all dressed in our new Spirit Club t-shirts and passed out bookmarke rulers at the front doors of the Beaverton Middle School. Each student was personally handed a ruler and told Welcome Back. They all looked so nice in their fresh new school clothes and they were excited to see their friends again. It was such an easy thing to do for them but the message was out...we are excited your are here and we hope you are too...more is yet to come! Boy, am I glad we organized that as there was no staff members or teachers available outside to greet these kids as the got to school and the first day would have seemed like every other day. I think Spirit can be catchy and I hope we spread a lot of that on the first day of school!
Our second event was an after school Pizza and Poster Making session. Kids were invited to stay after school to make posters for our upcoming football games and to eat a slice of pizza. We were hoping for a handful of kids to sign up so weren't we surprised when 95 of them did!!! The kids had a great time making posters, interacting with friends and showing school spirit. The Principal, Mr. Jeff Budge, told us the school never looked better with all the posters decorating the walls. It was deemed a true success!
Last Friday we hosted a Homecoming Tail Gate Party and inivted kids, parents and community members to come to out after the parade and eat hot dogs, listen to music and play some games. The party lasted about 2 hours and the area was packed and a lot of fun was had by all.
We are excitedly planning our next Pizza & Poster Making session for 10/23/09 after school and organizing a Fundraiser Dinner and Auction that will be on November 7, 2009 at the Beaverton Bowl & Lounge. I hope that more parents join us along the way and that we continue to instill Spirit & Pride in our youth.
If you are interested in helping us plan more events, want to purcase a Beaverton Spirit Club t-shirt or sweatshirt or are interested in providing us with a donation to fund our events please contact me at sonya@sonyaloose.com or give a call to 989-429-2600.
With Spirit,
Sonya Loose

The months have flown by since this particular day. The day an older gentleman came into the office and I invited him to sit a spell. Turns out he was looking for someone, I was not that someone, but I tried to help him determine who he may have been looking for. We never did figure out who he was looking for, but that was not a problem for either one of us...
We chatted for a while, and I found out that he wrote poetry, and the nature of his call that day, was to share it with this person whom he was looking for, but since that person could not be found, he shared his poems and his writings with me. I in turn shared a poem with him, I had posted it as a blog entry, so I quickly found and printed it for him. He allowed me to make copies of some of the pieces and also gave me permission to post them on the internet for more to enjoy.

A couple weeks later I received in the mail a letter and additional writings. Most of the writings are very spiritual, and may not really be recepted by all, however, I have enjoyed them very much. He in turn asked permission to share the poem with his church member, which I granted.... I think my grandma would be pleased to hear that so many people are enjoying her heart felt poem about her hom....
I will always remember that day and would like to share this poem with you. In the future, I will plan to share a few more..
Two Smiles
When two smiles meet and both are sweet,
Then it surely is a pleasure,
To see both of them, each a perfect gem,
And each of them a lovely treasure.
There are many smile of various styles,
That may appear upon a face,
Make very, very, sure your smile is pure,
And you won't end up in disgrace.
Everyone enjoys, whether they are girls or boys,
Wearing a smile instead of a frown.
Just practive wearing a smile... all the while,
Out in the country as well as in town.
You'll find folks you meet on road or street,
Will give to you a smile of their own.
Soon you'll realize you can smile with your eyes,
And happiness will not be yours alone.

1. Price! Prices on Wixom Lake are the most affordable in the Fall than they are at any other time during the year. Home owners on Wixom Lake reduce the prices in the fall since they did not sell the cottage during the summer months and do not want to "hang on" to the property all winter long.
2. Selection! The amount of inventory remains high on Wixom Lakewhich means you have a great selection to choose from. Currently the Clare/Gladwin Board of Realtors shows 64 active listings on Wixom Lake priced between $39,900 to $1,750,000. As you can see Wixom Lakecan accomodate all budgets!!
3. Start to Enjoy & Explore Beaverton! Beaverton, Michigan home of Wixom Lake is not just a community to visit during the summer months. Wixom Lakecan definitely be enjoyed during June, July & August by boating, jet skiing and fishing. But, when the leaves begin to change and the community is full of fall color you should bring your ORV and ride our extensive trail system or drive along Beaverton or Hockaday Roads and visit our Amish farms. We have excellent orchards, such as the Fruitful Orchard in Gladwin and wonderful Pumpkin Farms, such as Maxwell's Pumpkin Farm and Wild Pumpkin both in Beaverton. Step away from the lake and enjoy our beautiful countryside! When the snow begins to fall and the lake freezes over ice fishing and snowmobiling begin. Wixom Lakebecomes dotted with ice shanties and the roar of snowmobile engines can be heard riding on the lake. There are several snowmobile trails in the area that allow you to get to Meredith, Leota, Houghton Lake, St. Helen and beyond. By the time summer rolls back around you will fully understand how great our community since you have experinced it all yourself!

A little fawn is so cute to watch, they frolic about! Sometimes they're wobbly on their feet....
Deer season is here now and will continue in some form through the end of the year.
Please don't shoot ones with spots!
It's very common for deer to cross in front of you (sometimes dangerously so) as you're driving down just about any road here in Gladwin County. Certain times of year, time of day, or a particular road is more likely to find the deer.
