Today it finally feels like spring and I am thrilled! It has been a long, very cold winter in Mid-Michigan and I have avoided going outdoors as much as possible. This has been unfortunate for my young, rambunctious, high energy Irish Setter who really just needs to run.

Fortunately for my dog, the Lansing Area has two off-leash dog parks that give her an opportunity to run freely and expend her limitless energy. Dog parks are a great place to socialize your dog and get some exercise too!

My favorite dog park is the Soldan Dog Park which is part of Hawk Island Park. The park is owned by the City of Lansing and operated by the Ingham County Parks. This dog park has over 17 fenced-in acres for dogs to run off-leash, a large pond for dogs to swim and a smaller fenced-in area for small breeds. There are trails to walk on and an expansive open field. In addition, there are plenty of bag dispensers and garbage cans so you can easily clean-up after your dog. There are even dog and human drinking fountains. Entrance to the dog park is free, although there is a small fee for parking at Hawk Island on weekends during the summer months. There is frequently a Sheriff's Deputy near the entrance gate so make sure you have your dog license or you may get a ticket.

The other off-leash dog park in the area is the Northern Tail Dog Park operated by the City of East Lansing and located near the East Lansing Aquatic Center. The Northern Tail Dog Park is a two-acre, double-gated, fenced, off-leash park featuring a doggy station and a few shade trees. It is located just north of the East Lansing Softball Complex along the Northern Tier Trail. This dog park has a very friendly atmosphere and is more open than the Hawk Island Park so it is much easier to keep track of your pet.
