Hastings, MN

Just South of Hastings, Minnesota is the Little Log House Pioneer Village. The fourth weekend in July they hold the most amazing Antique Power Show you will ever see. This is not your ordinary Old Tractor Thrashing get together. A few highlights of the Village are the replicas of the old Hastings Spiral Bridge, St. Boniface Church, and a working Grist Mill. Sylvia's flower gardens are beyond breathtaking.

This years Power show features National Harvester. The action is nonstop with live music, a western shoot 'em up, parades, truck and tractor pulls. For a complete list of events go to the Antique Power Show schedule.

Don't miss the final 2009 Cruise-In. This is the rourth year and it keeps getting better. Classic cars out cruising, 3 blocks of Historic buildings, shops food, drink and lots of people. It is the photo "Op" you've been waiting for, or just a good time to reconnect with friends. Enjoy the cars, shop the shops, and have some food and drink at the 2009 HISTORIC HASTINGS SATURDAY NIGHT CRUISE-IN!

The cars start coming down around 4:00PM The official hours are 5:00 to 10:00PM

Not the first Barge this Spring to come through Hastings, but, the first one I had the chance to see. There is nothing like walking along the river next to a masive Barge heading for Lock and Dam No.2.

The observation deck allows you to watch boats, barges and sometimes even a Paddle Wheeler as they raise and lower in the locks getting ready to navigate the next part of the Mississippi.

My grandsons love to push the BIG GREEN BUTTON and listen as "some guy" talks about the Lock and Dam and the whole process of how the boats enter and leave.

It's a beautiful, short walk from the Historic Downtown of Hastings. You pass Lake Rebecca and it's many ducks and geese, fisher people, and boaters using the public boat dock and marina.

A short drive from the Twin Cities. Come down and visit sometime!

The Hastings Area Chamber (www.hastingsmn.org) and Mn/DOT (http://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/hastingsbridge/) sent this out today to Chamber members encouraging them to put this in business and car windows.

Of course, there's a story behind this.

The problem starts with a four lane Highway and a two lane bridge. Regular Hastings Bridge travelers know the rules. Get in the left lane as soon as possible and DO NOT let anyone cut in front of you from the right lane, especially in the last block before the actual crossing. Minnesota Nice rules do not apply. It is every man for himself and we come under severe scrutiny if we don't close the gap and someone sneaks in.

Now because bridge repair has reduced traffic to one lane, we have a Zipper Zone. That is two lanes of traffic taking turns as they merge into one.

After a week of Zipper Zone Anarchy that included incidents of center lane hogging and some minor road rage, Hastings and it's Zipper Zone have been the subject of radio show hosts and newspaper reports. Tickets have been issued and coffee groups at Emily's have had lots to talk about.The Hastings Area Chamber and Mn/DOT sent out a business or car window flyer asking it's members to spread the word.

Call it an attempt at moving traffic along or a reminder that this is Hastings, after all, and we are known for being friendly and nice. Call it whatever you like but, this evening as I drove through town the Zipper was alive and well and traffic was zipping along merrily.
