There hasn't been much in way of scenery since Lexington, Kentucky. The last few states, Indiana, Ohio and Missouri, have been amber waves of grain. Until, that is, we hit Hannibal, Missouri on the road trip to Topeka.
Now, Hannibal is a little out of the way, but Dick is sort of into the whole Tom Sawyer thing, so we put it on the itinerary.
It's a charming town with lots of great historic homes, and lots of history. We also found fun.
It was the Mark Twain, a riverboat that has been a fixture in the town since the '60s. And we decided to do a total tourist thing and take the evening dinner cruise.
It's a family owned business, run by Captain Steve and his wife, Sandy. And their daughter helps run the dinner part of the operation.
There is even entertainment from L.A. Suess, a virtuoso on the harmonica and banjo, which he plays at the same time. He can also sing. The man clearly has a good time, and he's been performing on the Mark Twain for the last 15 seasons.
And the ride included some pretty spectacular views, including a sunset over the river that took my breath away.
Tomorrow I'm downloading Tom Sawyer onto my E-Reader.
