Kansas City MO - Update on Waldo rapist

You may recall reading in a previous post about the Waldo rapist that has been upsetting the normal, peaceful, happy lives of the residents of the Waldo neighborhood in Kansas City. The people of Kansas City have held flashlight walks and even a fundraiser to increase the amount of the Reward for the capture of this violent criminal known as the Waldo rapist. The reward is now at $12,000.

The Kansas City Police Department has received more than 400 tips regarding this case. Ten officers have been assigned to the case and they are following every lead.

In addition to their regular duties, the KCPD has held self defense/ personal safety classes for women and gone into residents' homes to evaluate the homes for safety and security. You can request a free security survey of your home by contacting one of the Community Interaction Officers.

This criminal has not stopped people from buying homes in Waldo. Here is a market report from 1 Januaray - 4 March 2010.

Criminals can attack in any neighborhood so whether you live in Waldo or another area of Kansas City (or anywhere), take steps to ensure that your home is secure.

• Make sure the windows are locked.
• Have the long screws installed to secure deadbolts to the frame of the home (and lock the doors).
• Consider installing an alarm system.
• Dogs may deter some criminals from entering.
• Women living alone may wish to create the appearance that a large man lives in the house.

One of the most important general rules of safety is to stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Criminals look for people who appear distracted or weak.

• If you are going out at night, travel with friends in a group.
• Call one another to make sure everyone is safely home at the end of the night.
• Watch each other to your cars and homes.
  
• Carry your cell phone with you at all times (make sure it's charged).
• Whether you are in your home or out about town, call the police when you observe suspicious activity.
• If you feel that you are being followed, do not go home alone; go to a public place where there are other people.
• If you think you are being followed in a car, drive to a police station.
