Westport is located south of downtown Kansas City Missouri; north of Brookside and the Plaza; east of Kansas University Medical Center ; west of University of Missouri @ Kansas City, Rockhurst and the Kansas City Art Institute. Westport Road runs at a diagonal through the usual grid design found in Kansas City. Shops, bars and restaurants line Westport Road and the surrounding streets. Residential dwellings are immediately beyond the business core; some homes may accommodate both a business and a residence.

Cobblestone courtyards, narrow streets and wide, tree-lined sidewalks make Westport a perfect place to meander through eclectic shops, pausing for a drink or a meal at the various venues. Pryde’s is an excellent place to find that perfect gift for a special occasion. Savor an ice cream at Murray’s. Get your hair done at Lady Luck. Kelly’s, a Kansas City landmark, is a good place to learn a little history as you sip an adult beverage. History buffs will enjoy the historic markers throughout Westport telling about early events in Kansas City - including the Battle of Westport, one of the largest battles fought during the Civil War. Young professionals living in Westport like the idea of being able to go out on the town without getting into a vehicle.

Westport in Kansas City began as a Trading Post around 1821. Francois Chauteau’s original Trading Post on present day Grand Avenue was relocated to higher ground after the flood of 1826.Westport was incorporated in 1827. In 1897, Westport was annexed into Kansas City.

Kelly’s was the last place for wagon trains to load up on supplies before continuing on into Indian Territory along the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 designated all land West of the Missouri River as Indian Territory. No towns or trading posts were allowed beyond the line. Kelly’s @ 500 Westport Rd. was built in 1850 and is the oldest surviving brick structure in Westport.

Daniel Boone’s grandson, Albert Gallatin Boone, owned the building for 5 years; he sold it to Jim Bridger; later, the Weidenmans ran it as the Westport Inn; the present owners are Pat and Kyle Kelly. Kelly’s is on the National Historic Registry. Joe’s Pizza and the rooftop deck are recent additions enjoyed by Kansas Citians today.

McCoy's is across the street, on the NE corner of Westport Road and Pennsylvania. John Calvin McCoy is known as the founder/father of Kansas City.

The sculpture by artist Tom Beard, at 40^th & Broadway, depicts early Westport settlers and entrepreneurs Jim Bridger (Mountain Man), Alexander Majors (Pony Express), and John Calvin McCoy.

In 1904, Mario's @ 204 Westport Rd, was a horse shoeing business with stables below and human living quarters above. Today Mario's serves up the unique Grinder sandwiches we all love.

Westport Presbyterian Church @ 201 Westport Rd. was built in 1835 as Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Town of Westport. Alex Majors and John McCoy were both elders in the church.

Some homes are used as business space - other homes are just for living.

History buffs can follow the signs for a self-guided tour of Westport. During the Civil War, 30,000 men from Union and Confederate forces participated in the Battle of Westport. If you see that many people in Westport today, it's probably just Friday night.

Westport, Missouri - Charming Area to Live

Westport is in the heart of Kansas City. Westport is a small, unique village just north of the Country Club Plaza. The history of this area runs deep and is kept alive by the Westport Historical Society. In the late 1800's, Westport was home to pioneers looking to strike it rich out West. Westport served as a jumping off point for those wanting to hit the trails heading west or hit the Santa Fe Trail to head South towards New Mexico. While the fever for westward exploration struck some, others settled down in this little neighborhood, which witnessed Kansas City's growth around it in the coming years. At one point Westport was also the site of a Civil War-era battle. Today, its historical past mixes with an array of modernized nightclubs, bars, live music, and more to attract visitors to this village within the city.

Kelly's Westport Inn at Westport Road and Pennsylvania is a favorite local bar/pizzeria that your grandparents may have gone to when they were dating. Westport's retail district has long been known as one of the city's main entertainment districts. Every weekend evening, all the bars, restaurants and clubs are packed. People will drive for miles to come blow off some steam in the biggest little city in the United States. Westport is culturally diverse and attracts large crowds on evenings and weekends. Houses in this area sell for as little as $50,000 - $500,000 with condos selling for similar prices.
