Seagrove's Farm History via Capital Area Preservation Inc., Raleigh NC Seagroves Farm, 1617 Ten Ten Road, Apex, Easement Acquired: 9/24/2007

The John H. and Nevada Seagroves Farm is an especially intact turn-of-the-century tobacco farm complex that features a one story, triple-A-roofed house and several frame outbuildings. According to family members, Raymond Baker of Apex and his three brothers built the Seagroves Farm around 1910 and embellished it with a wraparound porch and decorative gable trim. Born around 1875 to a tenant farmer, John Seagroves was no doubt the beneficiary of bright leaf tobacco's expansion in western Wake County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He bought his own 92-acre farm for $540 in 1904 and also served as a rural mail carrier. All that remains of the vast farm are the house, several of its outbuildings on approximately 1 acre in fast-developing Apex. Owner Cotton Custom Homes, Inc. donated a preservation easement to CAP in September 2007 and will rehabilitate the house and outbuildings for their business offices in accordance with a rehabilitation agreement with CAP.
