Early Spring Produce Stands in Charlotte Small Towns

Are you dreaming of last summer’s delicious tomatoes? In Charlotte, it’s too early for those home-grown tomatoes, but it’s not early to buy fresh produce in area small towns.Stallings Produce Stand

In downtown Matthews, the Matthews Community Farmers Market has been open every Saturday morning from 8:00am to 10:00am all winter. This farmers market sells only goods produced within 50 miles of Matthews. The early spring produce available in March includes kale, lettuces, mustard greens, arugula, pea and corn shoots, parsley and other herbs. Local farm-raised beef and pork are available as well as local honey, goat cheeses, eggs and dried apples and tomatoes.

The regular season at the Matthews Farmers Market opens on April 7, 2012. During the regular season, the market is open every Saturday from 7:15am until noon.

Two farm stands operated by Providence Produce opened for the season on March 1st. One is at the Rock Store in Stallings and the other is in downtown Mint Hill at Highway 51 and Lawyers Road. I visited the Stallings Providence Produce stand this morning. It is fully stocked with a range of fresh vegetables and fruits. They’ve brought their produce in from our neighbors to the south: Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. As Charlotte area gardens and farms start to produce later in the spring, the Providence Produce stands will have locally-grown fruits and vegetables as well.
