Surviving Cancer Outer Banks Style

Matt Huband: Real Estate Agent in Kitty Hawk, NC

I wanted to pass along a great story that was posted in The Outer Banks Sentinelabout a local cancer survivor named Ed. I am sure everyone in America knows someone who has had cancer, both my parents are cancer survivors. Each and every person who survives cancer goes through a great amount of shock, grief, and then the torture of chemo or radiation. Like so many other survivors Ed has as a story to tell. He was able to take is own personal experience and capture it by writing a book titled"Ed ... It Was Malignant". The book talks about the struggles Ed endured and the great resources that are available that helped him get by each day. Ed now trains for the OBX Marathon which falls 1 year and 1 day from the time he was diagnosed with cancer. Ed thought it would be a great testament to all those who inspired him and to those who lost their fight to be able to finish the marathon. If you know someone who is currently battling cancer reach out to them and pass this article along.

Ed is donating a portion of the proceeds from his book to The American Cancer Society. Each and every year my family donates and takes part in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life and I encourage everyone else to do so. To read the story go to When Cancer Called Ed

Definition of Recession

Webster's definition of Recession is - 1. going back; withdrawal, and 2. a temporary falling off of business activity.

Wow. Cut and dry. No pain, No worry. No panic. In fact, compared to where we have been the definition of recession is quite comforting! But ... I feel the need to take issue here.

Looking back at the devalued neighborhoods and the concept of lost investment for those who weren't caught in the short sale/foreclosure vice, the pain of this recession is bad enough. For those who have lost their homes to foreclosure and those who had to sell for less than mortgage balance, my heart goes out to them. We all have seen friends and perhaps family who have lost everything including jobs and have had to start over ... from scratch. Then there are those who are simply without any resource to recover at this time.

And yet lessons learned from this recession will hopefully stay with us for a long, long time. So ... what have I learned from both my own experiences and those I care about as we have fought through this quagmire.

My faith is stronger. My family and friends are the best value in my life. It was time for us to reassess the importance of stuff. I needed my stuff. I had to have more stuff. When there was no more room for stuff it was time for a yard sale ... so I could make room for more stuff.

So have I changed? I sure hope so. I don't need stuff. (And I'm sticking to that.) My relationships to God, Mike (the love of my life for almost 44 years), my family and friends are what matters more than anything.

Support in hard times. Sharing memories of the past. Understanding there are far too many who need help more than I need stuff. Being together to create memories for the future. These are some of my lessons of this recession I've learned. (I'd love to hear your comments. E-mail me or visit my web site.)

So what made this seem so easy for me in addition to the relationships mentioned above. Well, I'm exactly where I want to be. I love the Outer Banks and, as people decide to buy or sell, I get to share my joy of this incredible place on earth. A bad day here is better than the best day any place else. All one need do is go to the beach, get barefooted, and walk along the edge of the water. And I'm serious!Outer Banks escape from recession You'll find perspective there. If you'd like more information about this beautiful area, visit my web site at www.OBXperts.com.

My advise to you then is to identify your joy. Get rid of the junk and find what really makes you happy. This is the art of survival in good times and in recession. Keep a song in your heart and a smile on your face. (You know what's coming) This will make folks wonder what you're up to!

We've made it through this . We've survived. We've learned. We will succeed!

Outer Banks To Get Wind Tower Project

09-28-09

No matter when you come to the Outer Banks there always seems to be a breeze blowing. Now Mother Nature is going to work when Duke Energy plans to install 3 test wind towers off the coast of Hatteras next year. The test towers will be monitored to see how effective and what impact they will have on generating "green" electricity. If the test proves to be successful a large scale wind farm will be built approximately 7 miles off the coast of Hatteras in the Pamlico Sound. For years the state had plans to try and harness the wind that continually blows on the Outer Banks. Now with the "green" movement all the rage the timing is right. Many local and state leaders were in Hatteras last week to kick off the campaign and talk to local residents. There are already 2 wind towers on the Outer Banks, one at the Coquina Beach access and at The Outer Banks Brewing Station.

I think the project can be a great asset to the Outer Banks if done properly. Many residents on Hatteras and the Outer Banks lose power during storms. Hopefully these wind towers can provide the power needed to keep the lights on and ultimately help lower our energy bills.
