North Carolina Dept. of Wildlife Resources stocked kokanee salmon, onchorynchus nerki, in Nantahala and a couple other lakes in western North Carolina in the 1950s or 1960s as forage fish for northern pike, which they also stocked. Pike died, but the salmon have evolved and hung on. The kokanee are on average 20-24" long for the bucks and 14-16" long for the hens.

There is no way to catch these fish unless you are invited to the Rainbow Springs Club or know someone who owns property further downriver on Water Gage Road or own property within the Rainbow springs road areas referred to as Water gage road or thunderstuck road. The whole river where they run is private, and in North Carolina that means no fishing, no wading, etc.

This is my 82yo lively, active, upbeat and optimistic great-grandmother Emma. A natural redhead with a passion for life and a mouth that's been referred to as "Mouth of the South". She's opinionated and she's not afraid to tell ya, usually whether you want to hear it or not. But more than anything, she's the most gracious and giving good hearted person I know. At 82yo, up until a week ago she was still working 5 nights per week, sitting and doing light housework/chores for another elderly 99yo lady. She's always been a hard worker, being a registered beautician in the state of NC for the past 67 years. In the past 5 years, she's been plagued with strokes, fluid, kidney stones, lack of apetite, stomach ulcers, etc. etc. You name it, she's had it. Pair that along with past knee replacements on both knees and back surgery just a decade ago - it's hard to believe she's made it this long. She is a figher and is a strong woman. But as of this week, she was dianosed with cancer - it's spread over much of her body and the treatment, much less the testing to see where it is exactly, would be too much for her frale body to handle. We've made her comfortable in a local nursing home of which my mother manages and she's already started telling her jokes, riddles, stories and opinion to the residents there. Any prayers would greatly be appreciated! Miss Emma needs to be around forever!
