"Tuesday morning, the 11-and-12-year-old Wilkes County All-Stars softball team and family members were treated to a celebratory sendoff to the Little League Softball World Series Tournament in Portland, Ore.

Wilkesboro Baptist Church served them breakfast at the church and presented players with mementoes and snacks. A Wilkesboro police car and fire truck then escorted vehicles with players and family members through downtown and down U.S. 421 to N.C. 115, where the convoy headed south on N.C. 115 toward Douglas International Airport and the flight to Portland.

The travelers from Wilkes, totaling about 30, were to change flights in Phoenix, Ariz., arrive in Portland about 7 p.m. Tuesday and be transported by Little League representatives to their motel."
