Lake Hickory NC

It may be cold, but it's not too soon to start planning this summer's vegetable garden.

As part of its Science After Dark series for adults, in Hickory will present an Organic Gardening Workshop at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 in the planetarium building.

Learn the basics of organic gardening - benefits, myths and helpful products. Plan a garden veggie patch and make a starter vermicompost bin to use at home.

The interactive and informative workshop will be led by Judy Sigmon, CSC educator, and Kelly Groves, environment and natural resources agent with NC Cooperative Extension.

Cost to attend the Organic Gardening Workshop is $8 CSC members and $10 nonmembers. Includes hors d'oeuvres. Beer and wine available by donation.

The battle continues at Catawba Science Center in Hickory, where there are still slots available to compete in the Guitar Hero Tournament through Jan. 21.

Competitors can rock out on the dome in Millholland Planetarium in front fans - virtual and alive, while they compete at one of two levels in the Guitar Hero video game - hard or expert. Each 20-minute block includes three songs.

Cost to rock is $5 per 20-minute time slot for CSC members and $8 per 20-minute time slot for nonmembers. Prizes will be awarded to the players with the highest score at each level.

Laser Guitar Hero

Science After Dark presents graphics and songs from the popular video game, Guitar Hero, during a laser light show on the dome in Millholland Planetarium on Jan. 22 & 23 at Catawba Science Center.

Songs include Weezer's My Name is Jonas, Alice Cooper's School's Out, Helicopter by Bloc Party and The Hand That Feeds by Nine Inch Nails.

Show times are 7, 8:30 & 10 p.m. on both nights.

Tickets are $5 for CSC members and $8 for nonmembers.
