The Catawba Science Center is extending the run of Swamp Things: A Look at Life in a Southeastern Swamp through Labor Day, Sept. 7 due to popular demand.

Catawba Science Center will be open Labor Day September 7 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

. . . . so that visitors can have a final chance to see the exhibit's bobcat kitten, six-foot alligator, Burmese python and more.

Swamp Creatures Tuesdays, 4 p.m.
Join a swamp guide for an up-close visit with some of the animals in CSC's swamp, while learning about their behaviors and habitat.

Learn what the alligator and other swamp animals eat during this exciting, live feeding. .

Swamp Life Saturdays, 11 a.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m.
Visit Swamp Things during the weekends and get a special look at the day's featured creature, and learn how it fits into swamp ecology.

Hickory NC Treasured Trees Program

The Hickory Treasured Trees Program was established for the purpose of preservation and identification of trees in the city.

By creating citizen awareness of the importance of mature trees, the Treasured Trees Program promotes preservation of these significant trees from topping, damage and removal.

Criteria for Treasured Trees Nomination

• SPECIMEN-

Size: Nominated tree should be of distinctive size for its species, beauty or age as compared to other individual species in the city.

Form or Rarity: Tree is outstanding specimen or form for its species. Tree is of a species that is unusual for the area or is unique.

• HISTORIC- Tree has association with or contribution to historic structure, district, noted person or historical event; documentation must be provided as to the association of the historic landmark, event or person important to the city or region.

• LANDMARK-

Tree is considered landmark to a neighborhood, city or special site location

Trees must be structurally sound, true to genetic form, not topped or badly pruned and must have full potential to reach mature size and form

Trees must be visible from publicly accessible locations

Process

Complete nomination form and submit to the City of Hickory Tree Board with approval of the tree's owner. Final selections, based on specific criteria, will be made by the City of Hickory Tree Board.
