Almost hidden away on a lovely Lake Norman peninsula off Perth Road in Mooresville is a truly remarkable neighborhood: Lake Norman Airpark. Imagine that instead of the usual garage you actually have a hanger for your plane(s) right next to your home and that you can taxi to and from the community runway at your convenience!

The Lake Norman Airpark is a community of about 56 homes surrounding the runway all of which are a member of the Lake Norman Air Park Owners Association which is a non-profit organization that owns and maintains the runway and approximately 40 acres of common area which includes the associated residential taxiways. Many of the homes have views of Lake Norman as well!

As you might imagine, properties at the Lake Norman Air Park do not turn over very frequently. There has been only one sale since January of 2008, a 4745 square foot home with a 2500 square foot airplane hanger and an additional 2500 square foot garage area below. One home is currently for sale; an approximately 5000 square foot brick home on 1.87 acres with a 40 x 50 hanger, lake access, pool with outdoor fireplace and a private concrete pad to the runway. The asking price is only $1,365,000!

Above is a picture I took from the end of the runway of a one of the homes with its hanger on the left.
The picture on the right is of one of the hangers with the home in the background also taken from the end of the runway.

In 2003 and 2004 the entire runway was repaved, a new taxiway was installed, centerlines and edge marking of the runway were completed, a new runway lighting system installed as well as two PAPI units which are on timers and operate continuously during nightime hours.
The Lake Norman Airpark is another example of our amazingly diverse and exciting recreational and residential communities along Lake Norman.

One of the most interesting and unique neighborhoods in Lake Norman is the Lake Norman AirPark where single family homes don't have just a garage for their cars. Homes have a hanger for their own planes and a runway is part of the community amenities! This certainly is nirvana for an avid pilot. Imagine walking out the door, hopping in your plane and taking off without even getting in your car!
The pilots of Charlotte EAA Chapter 309 hold their Annual Lake Norman Spring Fly-In at the Lake Norman Airpark which is coming up on May 2nd from 10:00am - 3:00pm. This event is designed to be a family affair for the public and all aircraft are welcome as well. What an incredible opportunity to mingle with the pilots, get up close to such a variety of planes and even take a ride in one. They usually attract about 60 aircraft, which are both home-built or certified.
As Chuck Porter wrote in his blog:
"The smell of hamburgers and hot dogs, a clear blue sky dotted with planes in the air and rows of aircraft spanning from the early days of aviation to the engineering marvels of today. Kids wide-eyed with anticipation of taking flight and builders bursting with pride on their just finished "creations". This is an EAA Fly-In. This is grassroots aviation and your chance to enjoy it.!"
There is no admission fee but they will be charging a "nominal fee" for lunch.
The Lake Norman Airpark is located in Mooresville on Perth Road just north of Hwy 150 on the left. For more information contact Ronald P Murray. Phone: 704.663.5521
