The one thing about real estate is that sometimes we never know when we start out in the morning where our day will lead us.

Back in the summer I headed out to Tuckasegee for new photographs of a land listing that we have. One of the property lines is shared by an old but still active church. As I wandered through the graveyard I was struck by what a risky business it was to be pregnant and have children, there were so many tiny graves with headstones documenting tiny and brief lives.

Who are we to advise an attorney to have a better umbrella policy?
One of our favorite closing attorneys asked me to take a ride with her and look at a piece of property with boundary issues. Since it is our listing and I’ve walked the property before, I agreed. Did I also mention this is one of our favorite closing attorneys?
It was hard to find a time frame that would work for both of us since the excursion would be a 2.5-3 hour time commitment, but finally we decided upon last Friday. The weather was gorgeous when I got up so I was looking forward to the afternoon as a great chance for a hike. By the time I’d reached the office, she had called to reschedule to Monday. Okay, it’s not like I didn’t have actual work that needed to be done.
Monday arrived and we met as scheduled. The day was overcast but sometimes that can be a plus. Thunder and lightening? Not so much.
We headed out towards Tuckasegee, thinking we were ahead of the storm and would still have time to take a look at the boundaries in question. We had a great conversation during the ride, something we rarely have a chance to do. Talking without distraction was nice…well, except for the thunder and lightening.
We reached our destination just as it was starting to rain lightly. We got out amidst the sprinkling and could sort of see what we’d come for but decided to drive a little further for a better view. You guessed it, the skies opened up and dumped buckets of rain out. “Don’t worry”, she said brightly, “I have Gore-tex!”. Perfect, I thought…I have denim. “And, there’s an umbrella in the door pocket”, she exclaimed proudly.
It fits in the pocket of a car door, a small pocket. Compact doesn’t begin to describe it - maybe compact light. Even compact would have been okay for our needs that day, but there were a couple of broken spokes. You know those teeny little floppy umbrellas the clowns use in the circus? I found myself WISHING for an umbrella like that!

Needless to say, we got soaked. Both of us were wearing denim jeans, me a denim shirt. Nothing like denim in the rain. We got back in the car with our drippy clothes and rode the 45 minutes back to town continuing our conversation.
She’s still one of our favorite attorneys but here’s our advice to you Counselor…get a better umbrella policy ;-D.

Who would ever have guessed that gargoyles can be found in Tuckasegee, NC? This one and its mate stand atop twin seven foot concrete pillars and are surrounded by expensive wrought iron gates. From Cullowhee take 107 to 281, head north and go about 8 miles.
The weeds are tall and scraggly, having not been attended to in a couple of years. What could these gargoyles be guarding?
Don't you think these are the ancestors of Pekingnese dogs? But really, gargoyles in Tuckasegee? Really?

Another beautiful cool morning today here to be planning my day in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Such a treat to be able to sit with the sliding glass doors open and the blogging muse is free to wander in. There's some kind of crow conference going on outside and it seems to be a pretty spirited conversation. Has anyone else noticed how big crows are getting? Here they seem to be as big as ducks but with shorter necks.
Ever since the apple tree next to the deck fell a month ago, the view to the rest of the trees is really been opened up. This morning its like watching some sort of Disney special feature. The new distance from the house gives the squirrels and birds a little more security to wander about the other apple tree without feeling like the humans could reach out and harrass them. From here the squirrels look more like adorable little mobile furry stuffed animals than wire chewing, insulation stealing, nest building, wood gnawing, dog antagonizing bushy tailed rodents.
In a few minutes I'm going to empty the card in my camera since with real estate photos it fills up fast. I have two appointments today with buyers plus I'm driving out to Tuckasegee and Little Canada for some updated photos of a 33 acre tract that we have listed for a gentleman who lives in London. I'll also take some additional yard signs just in case any are missing or damaged. Nothing looks worse than tacky yard signs. We love how ours look.

Guess I'd better get busy, there's always a bit of serendipity on these trips to photo listings. I never know what wonderful scene lays just around the corner in the mountains (and valleys) of Western North Carolina.
