Yesterday was a Great Day in Real Estate

Why was yesterday such a great day? Did I close three sales? Nope. Make a connection with a developer to represent a new subdivision? Nope.

Yesterday was great because I got the best call a Realtor can get. A call from a past client that just happened to be thinking about me and wanted to thank me again for doing an excellent job.

I sold Aaron and Rhonda's house in the beginning of August and at the same time helped them buy the home of their dreams. They were ecstatic when they closed on the new house and very appreciative of all of my efforts to ensure a smooth closing.

Yesterday Aaron called out of the blue just to say thanks again... over three months later! It's great to have clients appreciate me when we are closing a sale. It's incredible when a client calls me months later just to make sure I know that I am appreciated.

Nebraska Safe Haven Bill

While Nebraska lawmakers finalize details on modifying the Safe Haven bill, the 36^th child has been abandoned. It is anticipated that the bill will get final approval and be ready for Governor Heineman's signature by Friday, November 21, 2008. The new bill to be signed Friday will protect infants up to 30 days old.

The bill allows parents to relinquish custody of a child to the state. When Nebraska initially passed the Save Haven law that went into effect in July, 2008, there were no provisions regarding the age of the child. While the bill was intended to protect newborns, most of the children abandoned in Nebraska have been teens. Many lawmakers expressed concern about the long term emotional damage to older children by being abandoned and wanted the new bill to include only infants children. After much debate, the vote was 41- 6 in favor of the 30 day limit.

What was also not anticipated in the initial law was that parents from other states would travel to Nebraska to abandon their children. Because the bill allowed parents to drop children off at local hospitals without stating a particular reason for doing so and without fear of being prosecuted, this resulted in parents traveling from other states to make use of the law. Parents or guardians have traveled across the border from Iowa and also come from Michigan, Florida, and Georgia to take advantage of Nebraska's law.

Zillow Real Estate Market Report

Zillow just released their market report for the third quarter of 2008. The report tracks 163 metro areas.

Some interesting findings are that home values have dropped 9.7% from last year, one third of homes sold in the last year sold for a loss, and 14.3% of homeowners have negative equity (meaning they owe more than the home is worth).

Congratulations Bob Wear

Today two other agents and I hosted an Agent Tour of Homes in Somerset subdivision in Omaha, NE. We each gave away a $25 gas card. The winner at the property I am representing was Bob Wear with Century 21. CONGRATULATIONS, BOB!

Bail Out Package Educational Seminar in Omaha

The Omaha Area Board of Realtors is sponsoring a seminar to explain how the recent financial bailout is going to affect real estate financing... or should I say how the bailout is suppose to affect real estate financing. I have my doubts that government intervention in free markets can produce a positive result.

It is scheduled for Monday, December 1st. I plan on attending and I will be sure to post a summary.
