If your a thrifty person, it's time to take your talents to the next Level. Begin by reviewing the 10 Steps to becoming a thrifty builder and saving you thousands.
1.) Start by finding a builder who will allow you to make some of the purchases on those items he usually supplies: Fixtures, lighting, flooring, carpet, appliances and Trimwork.
2.) Do you know someone who works and has experience in any area of the building industry. For example if you have a friend who is a professional brick mason, get a quote and it could save you tons.

Thrifty Eyes Only!
If you've been told your "cheap" consider taking your talents for being "Thrifty" to a new level.
Time to put your eye for a deal to work FOR YOU!
Building for Less takes someone just like you. Have all the extras, upgrades and costly items you want without the high price tag. First find a builder that will allow you to make purchases on some of the items they normally supply within their quote, like: Appliances, Cabinets, Flooring, Fixtures, Trim Package and not limited to final Cleaning. Go through the Builders Quote in detail, see where you can save money. Work with your builder about who will be installing and dates needed, so it runs smoothly. Know any items you decide to purchase will be your responsiblity to provide on time and warranty issues.
Take thrify to a new level - Do you have a friend who is a Roofer, Trim Carpenter, Painter, Brick Mason, owns Window Company, owns Cabinet Company, ect. ? You may be able to contract them out or purchase from them cheaper than what the Builder Quotes you for those items. Again: If a problem accures with the items or their work, you will have to take care of it and most thrify people know the ropes here.
If you discuss all the steps with your builder it can run smoothly. Little things like who fills the nail holes, who installs, caulking, warrantly limits, and things that may be forgotten should be talked over in detail so you eliminate any mis-communication. You've heard the phrase "it's not my job" may come up if your not clear on things from the start.
With your Thrifty Eye you can find areas in the Builders Quote that can easily be bought yourself and/or done cheaper. FYI - Builders quote their fee to build your home but some also make money in many of the contracted areas in that quote. Simple example: Final Cleaning may say $800.00 - they most likely aren't paying that much to have the work done. The builder has to deal with scheduling, required work and guaranteeing the work is done correctly.
TOP LEVEL Thrifty - Contracting out your Home Building yourself. This takes some know how and knowledge in many areas but can be done if you educate yourself before jumping into it. There are codes, licenses, inspections, insurance and requirements you'll have to meet. When you contract out all the work to build your home yourself, it doesn't insure that the work will pass the inspection, you'll have to work with those you hirerd to correct their work, if it comes up. When you hire workers that agree to clean up the messes they make, it can save you alot of work and time. Knowledge, time, Good Scheduling and keeping on it everyday is key to avoiding costly mistakes. This is usually a little too much for most to handle.
