Its just around the corner, time to send your high school grad off to college. My Assistant, Lora has sent two off to college, one out of state, back home to Texas State and one to A&M. WHOOP!! And she will tell you that the cost of housing that student is actually more then the college itself. Her answer to that was to buy a little house in the area of the college and put some room mates in there with her student. This help offset the house payment and helped with tax benefits.
Things to watch out for before you buy! Some college towns will actually limit the number of people living in a house if they are not related. San Marcos for example will only allow 3 non relatives to live in a house together. So be sure and check the housing rental rules in your college area.
Now for the bad news! According to Trends in College Pricing 2007, published by the College Board,
room and board costs at private schools average $8,595 for the 2007-2008 school year, up 5 percent from the previous year. For public schools, the average cost for room and board rose 5.3 percent to $7,404 for the 2007-2008 school year.
As Lora will tell you if you can buy a home close to campus, where they can use campus transportation and not need a meal plan, you can cut way back on those expenses. Course your student has to be willing to cook at home and not eat out :) Try to stay close to campus or where the bus line runs, so you don't add cost like on-campus parking which can run a $1000 a year at some colleges.
Now with lower home prices & low interest rates purchasing a home in your college town might make sense. With an FHA loan, for instance, homes can be purchased for as little as 3.5% down - and what a great
investment. And if things go well and your student graduates in the normal 4-5 years of college, you could make a little profit from this investment.
So during that orientation trip to college, take a look around at the real estate market. You never know this may be another learning experience for your child.
I am sure that more then one of you can relate to this. Your at the grocery store or post office and in walks one of your former clients. You should know their name really, you helped sell their home, buy their home and all you can pull out of your hat is a "Hi". They know you can't remember, but you're trying to cover. How embarrassing?
Or do you have this happen to you, you have 5 things to get done today and you left the list on your computer or at home/office. Now you can't remember where you were suppose to go after the 1st thing on the list or what to buy etc.
Well I have an answer for you. My Assistant, Lora and I took a memory course a month or so ago and we were pretty skeptical that any one would be able to help us with our "wonderful" memories. We walk in the room where Craig Krause, Founder and Instructor of Direct Development Training, actually remembered our names and everyone else in the class that he had only met once. WOW!
He started us out with little drills and gave us some little clues and before you knew it we were actually remembering peoples names we had just met along with a list of 20 items that were not related. Who would have thought.
I highly recommend if you think that your memory is gone, its not, its still in there and just needs someone like Craig to bring it out. I'm not going to give Craig's secrets away here, but you can go to www.directdevelopmenttraining.com, but I will say that remembering lists has to do with sticking it to your body and I don't mean walking around with yellow stickies all over you and remembering names has to do with using someone's name at least 3 times in the first few mins. that you meet them.
HAPPY MEMORIES!
