Beep Beep Roadrunner!

RoadrunnerRemember the great Loony Tunes cartoon Wile.E Coyote and Beep Beep Roadrunner? The smug Wile E was always on the chase trying to capture the elusive Roadrunner. I know I spent hours following the antics of these two high energized characters. See short video below for a quick smile!

Here in Albuquerque and New Mexico the Roadrunner is the real deal, they look almost nothing like the cartoon portrays however they are fast on their feet running up to 18 miles per hour. And can certainly outrun and out maneuver a coyote.

The Roadrunner is New Mexico’s State Bird. Primarily living in the American Southwest theyRoadrunner vs Snake have spotted and feathered bodies and quite long tails. The bird is actually part of the cuckoo family. This bird is well quipped to kill and eat rattlesnake where most birds would be the prey.

Roadrunners drink very little and get most of their water from their foods. This bird is about 20” long from beak to tail and can have a wingspan of about the same. The bird resides in grasslands, deserts and wooded areas. They can easily tolerate the hot desert days and cold winter nights.

The Roadrunner is a scavenger and will eat a variety of foods including rodents, lizards, bugs, small birds, eggs, fruit etc. Roadrunners are very quick and can actually snatch a Hummingbird out of the air Ole Wile.E never had a chance! While feeding young you will often see the Roadrunner with a dead lizard or snake in its beak as it navigates back to the nest. The bird does fly but only for quick burst and usually in an escape mode.

Here is a short video to take you down memory lane, here Coyote actually catches Roadrunner.

Here at Albuquerque Homes Realty and www.AlbuquerqueHomes.com we know where some excellent properties that would make a great home for you and for some new Roadrunner friends. Here are just a few!

La Luz Trail an Oxygen Thin Experience

La Luz Trail Head

For many hiking the La Luz Trail can be an Oxygen Thin Experience.

Hiking in New Mexico and around Albuquerque is a favorite activity for many including us. We have explored most of the popular hikes and some not so popular. New Mexico has such a diverse landscape from sand dunes to high mountains that it’s easy to find a great trail almost anytime of year. The Sandia Mountain area alone offers over 50 trail options.

One of the most famous Sandia Mountain trails is the La Luz (Spanish for “the light”). This 7.5 mile one way hike starts at an elevation of 7,050’ ending at 10,378’, this is a 3775’ vertical gain! I can tell you from experience the La Luz Trail is an Oxygen Thin Experience. The trail is rated difficult but the reward is worth it.

The La Luz trail introduces you to just how immense the Sandia Mountains really are. The mountain is almost entirely granite and the enormity of the boulders, cliffs and spires are impressive. One of the more difficult parts of the hike is "Rockslide" which is a huge granite field of tumbled boulders some bigger than cars. It requires fifteen switchbacks just to get through this enormous section of trail.

Because of the major elevation gain you actually trek through 4 different life zones. The vegetation ranges from scrub oaks, pinon, ponderosa, douglas fir, aspen, engleman spruce and fur. The views from all along this trek are spectacular but the panoramic scene at the 10,250’ top is extraordinary. On a clear day you can see 11,000 square miles of the Rio Grande Valley and New Mexico.

Once at the top you can choose to return the same way you came or take the easy way down via the Sandia Tram, which is worlds longest Tram. We opted on the Tram ride and enjoyed the 15 minute ride back down. We love living here in the High Desert of Albuquerque and would be happy to show you around our wonderful city. Get your backpack ready and come enjoy the incredible view from the La Luz Trail an Oxygen Thin Experience.

Corrales New Mexico during Chile Harvest

Corrales NM is a beautiful village on the outskirts of Albuquerque NM. The population is around 7,500 and offers an old world feel. You will find beautiful homes tucked away in the Bosque or Cottonwood forest. Many properties have outstanding Sandia Mountain and Albuquerque city light views. Corrales is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan statistical area. With excellent proximity to The Rio Grande and the Bosque on the eastern edge the village provides refuge for native animals and plants. Corrales is an equestrian community and its quite common to see horses grazing or being ridden down the winding roads. The village fights hard to maintain its old world ambiance while being surrounded by the large cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho NM.

During the later summer and fall months chile and other produce are brought in from the local farms and sold in various markets. Wagner Farms is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. They will roast 50lb bags of Chile on sight so you can put them up for the winter months. Green chile is used prominently in these parts for many delicious and spicy recipes. Don’t forget the apples, peaches, melons and so much more. Come enjoy Corrales New Mexico during the chile harvest!

Wow! What a treat

While enjoying the beauty of Palo Duro Canyon we spotted these two wild turkeys! Instantly we went into silent mode as I hurriedly turned on the camera. Normally turkey will not let humans get near them much less linger to be photographed. These beautiful turkeys were busy pecking wild seeds, eating bugs and seemingly totally ignoring us.
