Economy is hitting rental housing

I have noticed in the last couple of months that there seems to be more renters staying in their current housing or combining households to save money. We have a pretty large number of vacant houses (8 or 9). But I have had a number of adults looking for houses that normally would not have had a roommate. I also have a number of parents calling to find housing for their adult children living in their homes. I think that the economy is finally making an impact on our rental market in Topeka. I also have several elderly tenants who have decided that they do not want the responsibility of home ownership. They would rather rent and let someone else take care of the drippy faucet. They have sold their homes and are now planning to spend them remaining years in a rental home. Are other parts of the country seeing the same trends?
