No fireworks in downtown Lawrenceville on July 4

In the face of declining revenues and the difficulty in raising sponsorship funds, Gwinnett County Government officials have decided the County will no longer organize the annual Gwinnett Glows 4th of July celebration. Gwinnett Glows has been a fun community tradition for two decades, but the old adage "all good things must come to an end" is particularly apt in this case given the current state of the economy.

The good news is that Gwinnett County residents still have a choice of other Independence Day celebrations taking place this year. Many of the events provide fun-filled festivities similar Gwinnett Glows, such as food, music, games, and, of course, fireworks.

Here are some places in Gwinnett County and around metro Atlanta where you and your loved ones can celebrate the independence of our great nation on July 4:

  • Lake Lanier
  • Mall of Georgia
  • Gwinnett Stadium (following Gwinnett Braves game)
  • Stone Mountain Park
  • Lenox Square
  • Centennial Olympic Park
  • Six Flags Over Georgia

A number of other events are held on July 3:

  • Duluth: Duluth Celebrates America
  • Lawrenceville: Prelude to the Fourth in Lawrenceville
  • Norcross: Pre-Independence Day Celebration
  • Sugar Hill: Sparks in the Parks

The Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau maintains a calendar of events. Visit the GCVB website to find these and other Independence Day celebrations taking place in Gwinnett County.

What is happening in Duluth in June and July

Summerstage - SummerStage Concert featuring The Great American Rock 'n Roll Revival

"What? Again? I thought old-time Rock 'n Roll was gone forever."

NOT SO!

Move over, Hip-Hop, 'cause we're fixin' to Bop Around the Clock!

When Butch Evans asked Damon Hendrix (amazing Elvis tribute artist) and The Sock Hops (fabulous vocal harmonizers) to join him for an all-out Rock 'n Roll Extravaganza five years ago, he had no idea that his brainstorm would blossom into The Great American Rock 'n Roll Revival, with performances in several states, or that their fun-filled music would keep them invited back for five years running- with sold-out shows becoming the norm!

Discussing the success of his Blast from the Past, MC Tony Baloney says "It's like we're reliving the movie 'American Hot Wax!' When Rock 'n Roll was born, it was in small theaters with people dancing in the aisles, and now it's happening all over again!"

50's, 60's and 70's Rock 'n Roll has a place in everyone's heart, but it's rare to find it being performed live any more. Butch and the Buckheads, Damon Hendrix and the fabulous Sock Hops have stuck to their guns for many years, and now bring their experience, enthusiasm and showmanship to the stage together in The Great American Rock 'n Roll Revival.

Appearing with such notables as Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, The Coasters, The Drifters, The Supremes, The Impressions, The Commodores, Peter Noone, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Three Dog Night, The Temptations, The Swinging Medallions and many more, The Great American Rock 'n Roll Revival is truly a fun-filled Show for All Ages- it even features a Twist Contest!

So break out your Penny Loafers, crenolines and Poodle Skirts, put on your jeans and white T-shirts and grease up your hair, and Be there or be square! See you on June 27th at 7:30 p.m. at the Duluth Town Green and Amphitheater.

Duluth Celebrates America
Friday, July 3rd

While many others around us have cancelled their Independence Day Celebrations, the City of Duluth felt it was important to move forward with our annual celebration. We cut back on our costs as much as possible, but we have still planned a wonderful event for you and your family to enjoy. Duluth is known for our patriotism and it is so important to celebrate and thank those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy. So, join us on Friday, July 3rd, at Scott Hudgens Park off Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in the River Green Office Park for an evening of music, fun, inflatables, rides, food and of course a fabulous fireworks display. Gates will open at 4:00 pm and entertainment will begin at 6:00 pm. Julie Hall will kick things off with the National Anthem, then The Woody's (Fleetwood Mac type band) will take the stage, and to wrap things up the Army Ground Forces Band, Loose Cannons, will have you on your feet. The fireworks will begin around 9:30 pm. Admission is FREE but donations will be graciously accepted. There will be a nominal charge for the inflatables and rides.

Red Clay Theatre
Young Playwright Showcase
Red Clay Theater is so excited to be able to offer an extraordinary opportunity to a young playwright. Ashley B. Harzog, Northview High School class of 2008, has written a delightful One Act play. She along with Jeffrey Moro (also class of 2008) will be producing the production under the guidance of RCT Managing Director Mary Carolyn Conti.

Looking for Laurie in All the Wrong Places, a quirky new comedy by young playwright Ashley B. Harzog, is about one woman's--and one man's--and his roommate's--quest for that perfect someone. The play satirizes Hollywood romantic comedies as it follows Laurie, one of those soul-searching types, and Matthew, a hopeless romantic, each searching for each others' happily ever after.

Historical Society and Museum at the Strickland House
ABOUT US: The Duluth Historical Society operates and maintains the Strickland House and the Duluth History Museum. Our goal is to preserve our history, record the present and reach for the future. We offer our visitors a unique experience of seeing a museum in a museum. The house and families that have lived there each have a story of their own to be shared. The historic marker tells about Alice Strickland being our first female Mayor of Duluth and the State of Georgia in 1923. It also records the fact that her home served as our first hospital. Visitors will experience artifacts, exhibits and pictures that will tell them about our town and its people, from the first inhabitants, the Cherokees and Creeks, to our founder, Evan Howell and those that have followed.

MILITARY EXHIBIT: Your time is running out for this year, so don't miss seeing this very moving exhibit. There is a letter from an Iraqi child to one of our Duluth soldiers. A must read for everyone. There is a companion exhibit at City Hall. Please make time to see both. We are sure that you will recognize someone.

BIRD HOUSES: Birds are always looking for new homes. Make one for them in your yard. They will reward you by coming back year after year. We have handmade cedar Bird Houses with a rust proof pole and instructions for $25.00 at the museum and Woody's nursery. Proceeds go to the Historical Society. This is a great way to help us and the birds.

FYI: Our hours are Thurs-Sat, 12-3 pm. Admission for adults is $3.00 and children is $1.00. Special tours are available on request. Have your next meeting, luncheon, tea, family reunion, school, scout, or church event at our beautiful historic property. Call us for information and a tour of the facility and grounds. We have parking. To reach us call 770-232-7584 or email info@duluthhistorical.org.
