Gardening Tallahassee

It's still not too hot to get outside and enjoy the beautiful springtime Tallahassee weather. My deck is now finished, my BBQ is up and cooking every day, and my mind is wandering to gardening ideas more and more while I cook for my wife and kids... Here are three little thoughts that came to mind that might be worth sharing:

  1. Rain Gardens
  2. Butterfly/Hummingbird gardening
  3. Natural Lawncare

Rain Garden Grant Program

First off, Rain Gardens... what are these you are probably asking..!? Well, good question. Rain gardens, simply put, are an area of your yard set up to catch and termporarily hold storm water and runoff. The idea being that the water will be slowly returned to the soil instead of tearing across the landscape and dragging with it precious nutrients and causing erosion.

To build a rain garden, You should incorporate plants, mulch and landscape design with rainwater collection in mind. The great part of building a rain garden right now, is that the city of Tallahassee - through the TAPP program - is providing grant money of up to $175 per project to purchase the plants and mulch for your rain garden. For more info check out the city's website here.

All of us who even mildly enjoy nature, cannot resist oooing and aaahing at the sight of a swallowtail butterfly, or two male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds battling over the prime feeding/mating territory in our yard. Now, thanks to the Native Nurseries here in town, we can impress our nature-loving friends with our plethora of pollinators!

Finally, last, but not least, I've spoken about them briefly before, but want to mention them again. If you are interested in natural lawncare in tallahassee, you have got to check out Natural Matters. Products can be purchased locally at the Green Living Center, at 102on N. Monroe St.

Thomasville Rose Show

Looking for a fun, family event this weekend? Something to do outdoors to enjoy our glorious spring-time temperatures..?

Although we are blessed by so many great events here in Tallahassee (e.g. last weekends chain of parks arts festival), we also have some incredibly beautiful neighboring towns that hold their own events. Thomasville, GA only 30 minutes drive, is a great example. A quaint, artsy, well-kept, pretty example of a classic southern town. Thomasville is holding it's annual Rose Show this weekend.

Starting tonight (Thur. Apr. 24th), with the Children's Rose Bud Parade, the festival goes through the 26th and includes equestrian events, orchid shows, bluegrass music, and oh so much more!!!

This is the 87th annual festival !!!!

Tracking Growth in Tallahassee

Ever wondered where you can get information on future developments and growth in your city..? Well, now Tallahasseeans have no problems finding the information that we want. Simply go to http://www.urbantallahassee.com/ to see a list of all proposed and pending new development projects in Tallahassee.

The website is the brainchild of TJ Lewis. life long resident of Tallahassee, Florida, and a Knight Creative Communities Initative (KCCI) founder. You will have to sign up, but if information on your community is what you want, this is the place to get it. Updates are regular, and information is pretty accurate.

Info on new and upcoming bars, restaurants, hotels, city redevelopment projects, etc. are all readily available on the site. Highly recommended.
