Sapelo Island Georgia

LIGHT HOUSE ON SAPELOAs I toured Sapelo Island I could see virtually every facet of a barrier island's natural community, from the forest growing inland to the salt marsh, and the beach and dunes systems. Viewing both life in the natural and the cultural history of Sapelo, was fascinating. My tour by one of the local land owners was unique in bring out highlights of the African-American community of Hog Hammock, University of Georgia Marine Institute, the Reynolds Mansion and a working lighthouse. Built in 1820, the lighthouse was in service until 1905 when it was deactivated. Following its 1998 restoration, it once again became a working aid in navigation. The historic Reynolds Mansion may be used for group conferences and retreats, with all meals included. A campground is available for groups of 15-25. My afternoon adventure with a fellow Realtor was spent for the most was part listeningto our guide, taking photos and decided on a listing price for an acre of land with in this remote Island. We were amazed at the complexity of the island and what it has to offer presently and what it may bring to bear in 5 t 10 years. There was a quaint old church with oak trees that would protect church goers from the sun as they sat for Sunday picnics, the narrow roads with canapes of old trees shading us as we drove the winding roads through out the island, the family of deer that crossed our path and of course the long narrowroad lined with palm trees lead to the pavilion then on too the walkway that took us the ocean, everything was unique, so picturesque, it definitely has a overwhelming signature of the old south. It will be difficult deciding which photos will work out best for we took so many.. As the sun was setting, we left the peaceful island. The boat ride back to the mainland gave us the opportunity to reminisce of our afternoon, the interesting sites, the people we saw, and the stories and history that were shared would be priceless.

The Island of Sapelo is about an hour south of Savannah Ga. near the town of Darien.
