News Bayview Village. Future Homes to be built in Bayview Village.
Information for Public Knowledge from City of Toronto Zoning Department. The former Page Public School, which served the North York community of Bayview Village in its first two decades, could be demolished to make way for a residential subdivision. Vaughan-based Sorbara Development Group is proposing to redevelop the 4.3-acre site, consisting of the approximately 50-year-old Page school building and attached greenspace, into a subdivision of 21 two-storey, detached homes around a new cul-de-sac, according to an information report going to North York Community Council Friday, Dec. 10. City staff are recommending a community consultation meeting on the proposal be held in the new year. The city's official plan allows for residential uses on the Page Avenue property, located southeast of Bayview and Finch Avenues, but the current proposal requires an amendment to the zoning by-law and subdivision approval. According to the city's report, issues to be resolved include the "fit of the proposed subdivision with the character of the existing neighbourhood", preservation of some mature trees on Page Avenue, and parkland requirements. Sorbara's Orchard Ridge Homes brand bought the school site from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) in the spring. The school board had been leasing the school to the private North Toronto Christian School for the past three decades but trustees voted in late June, 2009 to sell the property. (North Toronto Christian has stated in a newsletter it will continue using the school until its lease expires in June, 2011, when it will amalgamate at its The Yorkland School location.) Per provincial regulation, the TDSB's real estate arm, the Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC), circulated the property for sale to public bodies in the late summer of 2009, but neither the other school boards nor levels of government, including the city of Toronto, bought the property. The TLC subsequently put the property on the private real estate market. While the final sale price hasn't been released, Colliers International had listed the asking price as $7.25 million and advertised the property as a redevelopment opportunity in the affluent Bayview Village community.
