You wouldn't think a little guy like this could be worth $788,000., but the City of Cape Coral, and many other surrounding cities are paying this and more for the protection of the Scrub Jay!
The City of Cape Coral voted to spend $788,000. of General Fund dollars to protect the Scrub Jay. Named Scrub-Jay because they live only in the scrub and scrubby flatwoods habitats of Florida. These birds are listed as a "Threatened" species on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife's federal list. Florida Scrub Jays look similar to other jays but they do not have a crest, white-tipped wings or tail feathers, or black barring.
The $788,000. will be paid over a four-year period beginning in 2014. The largest portion $465,000 will be used to enhance the habitat on existing county Conservation 20/20 land to make it acceptable for Scrub Jays. The rest will be used for maintaining the habitat to keep the Scrub Jay happy and secure.
Believe it or not, this was the most economical way to meet the needs of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. The City will address all current and future Scrub Jay issues as well.
In this economy it's hard to justify so much money for a couple sightings. It's estimated that there are a total of 2 families of Scrub Jays in the City of Cape Coral.
Tonight is one of the biggest nights in Fort Myers, .....the Edison Festival of Lights Parade is tonight.
Head downtown tonight and see the most famous parade in SW Florida. The parade begins at 7:00pm and features lighted floats, marching bands, law enforcement officials and a famous Grand Marshall. The parade honors the life of Thomas Edison who has his winter home in Florida.
The parade is free to the public, however, there are "Street Seats" available for $10.00 These seats put you right in the parade literally on the street and guarantees the best view of the parade. The proceeds of the sale of these seats go to local non-profit and charitable groups.
Tonight at 7:05 The Florida Everblades are taking on the Georgia Gwinnett Gladiators. Tonights game is special... it is "Pink in the Rink".
The players will be wearing special pink jerseys and after the game these jerseys will be auctioned off. The proceeds go to Radiology Regional to fight breast cancer. I'll be there super early, camera in hand and will post pictures in a future post.

I went to my trusty optician at LensCrafter's Optique. This store at The Edison Mall is inside Macy's....kind of tucked outside of view on the second floor.... hard to find if you're not looking....but worth the search. The staff at this location is top notch!
I had a little wait time so I headed straight away to AuntieAnne's Pretzel. The guys that work at this location inside The Edison Mall in Fort Myers Florida are great! They'll make up a fresh pretzel....my favorite, the almond pretzel, and a cool Coca-Cola slushy. It was delicious!
