Slow down in Georgia during August on the Freeways!

Dateline: AJC 07/19/2010

Starting Aug 1, Georgia will launch a 30 day speeding ticket frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers' overtime. The rest to help with dwindling budgets. There will be 50 state troopers on duty at all times patrolling the 7 main intersections and highways. They are the following:
I-20 east and west
I-75 north and south
I-85 north and south
I-675 north and south
GA-985 north and south
GA-316 east and west
GA-400 north and south
5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every state trooper is supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 to 20 minutes. They have issued 30 brand new unmarked Dodge Charger Police cruisers and are bringing in all of their part timers on full time. If you work in the Atlanta area, you will probably take one of these highways. It's up to you how fast you are going when they clock you.
WSB and WXIA & CBS confirmed all of this. So be safe and don't forget speeding tickets are on you.
Look for city and county governments to adopt similar polices in the near future.

Fireworks at the Lake!

Looking for a great place to take the family for fireworks? Acworth puts on one of the best firework shows in the Atlanta area. Take a swim on the lake, bring your boat, bring a blanket, just bring it!

There will be live music concerts and once again, Acworth will welcome back FLASHBACK hitting the stage at 8:00pm. Admission to the fireworks and concert is free. If you do not have an Acworth Parking Pass (I do) or parking is full, you can park downtown and take the shuttle.

City of Acworth, Georgia - Winner of the 2010 All-America City Award!

The City of Acworth is pleased to announce that the Acworth Community has been selected as a 2010 All America City. The National Civic League's All America City Award Competition was held June 16 through June 18 in Kansas City, Missouri where twenty five cities from across the nation competed for the coveted designation. The distinction of being chosen as an All America City is a prestigious honor for those communities that have demonstrated success in overcoming community challenges. The Acworth Community highlighted three programs where the government, business, non-profit, and faith based organizations came together to achieve a common goal. The three programs are the Expanding Horizons, Acworth Achievers, and the Horizon Field.

The delegation including youth, business, community leaders, and faith based leaders, local officials, presented a ten minute presentation before a juried panel of judges. Mayor Tommy Allegood stated, "This award is validation of what we already knew. The Acworth Community is indicative of the traits aligned with the All America City designation. Our community collectively accepts this prestigious award and is honored to be chosen as an All America City. We feel privileged for the opportunity to display our wonderful attributes and to hopefully to inspire other communities to follow suit. What a great day to be in Acworth, Georgia!"

The Acworth Community also walked away with the multi-media popular vote award for the video put together by Chris Boggess with Northstar Church. The video highlighted the successes of the Horizon Field. Acworth received more than 36,000 online votes! Allegood stated, "the support we received for the video from the Acworth Community and all over the state of Georgia was overwhelming!"
