Slideshow of Downtown Alachua, FL

Alachua, FL's Main Street IS the city's downtown. It is a quaint street housing wonderful restaurants, clothing stores, sweets, gift stores and other establishments. Alachua does have several grocery stores and other businesses that you would expect a town to have, but this section is a prize of historic buildings and southern charm & elegance.

Only a short drive to Gainesville, Alachua is a great place to look for vacant land or real estate, especially if you are interested in a home with any amount acreage, a farm, or horse property. I really believe that you get a lot for the money here since you are not in the Gainesville proper .

Alachua is also minutes from some of world's largest fresh water springs: Poe, Blue and Ginnie Springs. Swim in the crystal-clear 72 degree water and pitch a tent on the springs' campgrounds!

Alachua County is strategically positioned so that within a 2-hour radius you can go to the beach, St. Augustine, State Parks, Golf (we have several golf communities here, including Haile Plantation), visit near-by historic Micanopy and a myriad of other activities and places. We are also only a few hours from all of the Orlando theme parks and Silver Springs Park!

Slideshow of Alachua, FL Farms

I made a slideshow for the Alachua County, FL Countryside, but this slideshow focuses on the city of Alachua, FL (there is a city of Alachua within Alachua County). Alachua lies in a North-Westerly direction from Gainesville and is a lovely little town with beautiful countryside. You will find different terrains in Alachua County from hilly, to heavily wooded, to pasture, to "scrubby" pines and palmettos, etc.

This slideshow focuses on land in and very near (CR 241-one of the most beautiful scenic drives you could ever take in this county!) Alachua, FL.

I have a POP QUIZ for you guys too: Identify where I took this photo

This probably won't be very difficult for anyone that lives near this restaurant and has seen this. Now, I might be missing something, but I am pretty sure STYEL is NOT, in fact, a word. YES, I did google it to see if it were some type of "classy" thing they were trying to do ala the "theatre" type spelling as opposed to theater.

My results only confirmed that I think this establishment made a boo-boo. Not only did the owner overlook this, but the neon sign maker did as well!

The first time I saw this I "lol'd" and vowed to take a picture of it next time I saw it. Without further ado, where is this sign from:

Funny sign

Where to eat in Gainesville: Angela's top picks/Gainesville, FL restaurant guide

I absolutely LOVE food. I'm not sure love is even a strong enough word for it, but I immensely enjoy savoring good food and plan my day around this act of mastication. Pre-career I had time to indulge in cooking at home. That was a different time in my life and I find myself being exhausted at the end of the day and not wanting to deal with preparing a meal, so I find myself picking up food from restaurants on the way home instead.

I have lived here for around 17 years at this point, which is long enough to at least get your feet wet in exploring Gainesville's culinary offerings. I'm quite fond of "Mom and Pop" operations and less interested in chains, as you will see by my list below. These are some of my favorite picks in Gainesville:

Favorite Sushi place (yes Dragonfly is good too,
but I live in NW Gainesville and this is less of a hassle.)
I've been going here for about 8 years. For those that
aren't fond of eating raw fish, there is a huge selection of
cooked rolls and even several rolls that don't contain fish.
My favorites are the florida, eel, spicy salmon tempura, bagel,
spicy tuna and crispy rolls:

Great portions, prices and food.
I love the Chofan Nuevo Latino (Latin Style
fried rice). Absolutely one of the best things
I've had in some time. The downside is that it is
not consistently good. It tastes different everytime
I get it, and the first time was the best. Ever since
then it has paled in comparison. <sniff>
The seafood patty (empanada) is also tasty.
I can't manage
to try anything else on the menu because
I'm addicted to the rice.
