Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden Opens Agave Yucca Forest Exhibit This Saturday, Nov. 21
One of the coolest things about living in the Phoenix area is the regular access to exhibits at the Desert Botanical Garden. This weekend, we have the opportunity to experience another one: the Berlin Agave Yucca Forest.
This exhibit, made possible by a Tending the Garden Campaign gift from Howard and Joy Berlin, showcases the diversity of the yucca, agave, and nolina families.
Grown across the world as ornamentals, yuccas and agave originated in the Southwest desert of North America, Central America, and the West Indies. There are between 40 and 50 species of the plants.
Scottsdale landscape architect, Bob Thompson of e group, led the exhibit team. The 11,000 square foot exhibit will bring dramatic new elements to the Desert Botanical Garden. A large Yucca filifera, which was salvaged during the Garden's Succulent Gallery construction a couple years back, is the first thing visitors see as they step off the Desert Discovery Trail and onto Joy's Overlook. A gently sloping walkway follows the natural wash, providing views of grouped agaves and leading into the Yucca Forest - an immersion experience that allows visitors to wander among giant yucca trees.
More than 1,000 plants were installed for this exhibit, with more than half of them coming from the Desert Botanical Garden's greenhouse collection. Some of these plants, such as the Hesperaloe tenuifolia, have never been on display before. Others, like the Yucca endlichiana, have not been on display more than 10 years. Two Yucca treculeana, which were grown from seed by the Garden's horticulture department, also will be displayed for the first time in this new exhibit.
The exhibit opens to the public Saturday, November 21 at 12 p.m.

The Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden is located at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, AZ 85008 | 480-941-1225.
