Phoenix Women's Council of REALTORS Celebrated the Seasons
We had a fabulous turnout yesterday for "Celebrate the Seasons," a fundraiser for some local causes hosted by the Women's Council of REALTORS®-Phoenix chapter.
The event, held at the Moon Valley Country Club, featured a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, live entertainment, and plated lunch. Proceeds benefited the Osborn School District Head Start Program and the HK Cummings Community Center.
The pictures below will give you a better sense of the fun we all had, as well as the magnificent beauty of the Moon Valley Golf Course. This lovely lady won the bid on the darling dog! She beat me out by about $100.00. Congrats to Peggy and her new puppy!

Friday Funnies: One very talented pumpkin carver!
They say dogs often resemble their owners. How 'bout these dog-o-lanterns, where the pumpkin carver has perfectly captured the dogs' likenesses?!!

Non-candy Halloween Treat Alternatives
Halloween just wouldn't be Halloween in America without candy. It's part of the tradition, part of the
fun. And yet with things like childhood obesity and diabetes running rampant among our kids, it might be a good idea for a reality check when it comes to the amount of candy we encourage our children to consume this holiday season. When I was a kid, there was an old man in our neighborhood who used to hand out pennies to trick-or-treaters. Even though money was admittedly worth more back then, who wanted a penny?
Still, there are things you can give out as Halloween favors that don't have to stomp every ounce of fun out of the exciting trick-or-treating adventure. Here are a few alternatives to saccharine-overdose inducing candy:
Animal Crackers
Animal Crackers are a classic snack most kids still enjoy. And they're much healthier than Kit Kats or Junior Mints! Many animal cracker manufacturers plan for Halloween, selling them in small packets that are ideal the trick-or-treaters.
Popcorn
Microwave popcorn is another classic snack that kids young and old love. Look for small, single-serving bags from the popular brands. Some are even decorated with a Halloween theme. Another option are individually wrapped popcorn balls.
Granola Bars or Energy Bars
Granola bars and/or protein and energy bars are a great alternative to candy bars. They come in all kinds of flavors, sizes, and textures.
Pencils, Pens, Notebooks, and Erasers

I love these myself! Halloween-themed pencils, pens, notebooks, and erasers are both fun and functional. You can usually find a wide selection at your local dollar store, also making them an affordable option!
Toys
Stores like Target are now offering a great selection of small, low-cost toys like bats, cats, snakes, zombies, and witches in that sticky, pliable plastic you throw against the wall so that sticks and then crawls down. They also have yo-yos, whistles, and other party favor type gags.
Stickers
I think I must still be a big kid, because I love stickers, too. As do most kid-kids. They're easy to find in large quantities, too. Party supply stores often sell large rolls of Halloween stickers that are perforated for easy separation into individual parts.

Friday Funnies: Now this is MY kind of doctor!
Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything
wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! ..... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?
Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.
Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!
Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.
Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!
Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.
And remember:
'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention
of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand,
chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally
worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, what a ride!'

Senate Approves Extension of $8,000 Tax Credit - Phoenix Homebuyers Win
A report out of Washington DC by the Associated Press just announced that the US Senate
has agreed to extend the $8000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers and to offer a reduced credit to certain move-up buyers. The tax credit had been set to expire on November 30.
According to AP:
A spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said senators agreed Wednesday to extend the existing tax credit for first-time homebuyers while offering a reduced credit of up to $6,500 to repeat buyers who have owned their current homes for at least five years.
A congressional aide said the tax credits would be available to homebuyers who sign sales agreements by the end ofApril 2010. They would have until the end of June to close on their new homes. The aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was not authorized to publicly discuss the deal.
Now that the Senate has voted, the bill goes on to the House and then to the desk of President Obama.
This is great news for both first-time buyers who have not yet acted, as well as for many move-up buyers who had been waiting to see what the market would do before deciding to purchase. Right here in Phoenix, it's a perfect climate for move-up buyers, as there are great buys all over the Valley for homes in the $300K to $800K price range.
It's been estimated that as many as 357,000 of the two million sales of previously owned homes recorded through Sept. 15 of this year are attributed to the tax credit - purchases that would not have been made otherwise.
