Portsmouth NH ~ Beautiful Fresh Snow Pictures

If you love snow, then come on up to New Hampshire! As of yesterday, we broke a record for the most snow to fall in NH in December. That old record of 43 inches of snow in December, set way back in 1876, was broken yesterday afternoon, December 31, 2007. The total for this December reached 44.5 inches of the fluffy white stuff.

Of course, not all of the state actually broke that record, and some parts of NH went well over that record amount. Concord NH, our state capitol, where the measurements for the state are recorded, is where the 44.5 inches was taken from.

Snow Covered Trees - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

Being here in Portsmouth, along the Seacoast area, we had less than that, but far more than we normally get in any one month. As a matter of fact, we've actually already had more snow here than we generally get all winter long!

We had a beautiful fluffy snow fall yesterday here in Portsmouth New Hampshire, and I thought I would share some pictures I took just walking around my yard.

The magical beauty of freshly fallen snow really has to be experienced in person.

The peaceful quiet and calm stillness that you feel in a fresh snow just can't be captured in pictures, and nor can the real beauty of what I really see when I look at through my eyes instead of through the camera.

Snowy Branches Reaching Toward My House - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007 My Snowy Side Yard - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

To see the fluffy white snow coating all these trees and branches is really just beautiful. It stays looking like that until either a wind comes along and blows it off or until the temperature rises and it all starts melting. But until then, it's just beautiful to look at!

The snow that covered all the bushes and trees framed my house so beautifully yesterday morning - I couldn't help but take these pictures to share!

Snowy Side of House - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007 Snow Covered Birdfeeders - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

Each of my bird feeders has about 4 to 6 inches of snow on their roofs....now to hike out there through the snow to fill them up!

Snowy Street Scene - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007 Snowy Street View Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

When the snow coats everything like our last snow did, it creates such a magical scene everywhere you look. These pictures really don't do what I was seeing justice.... you just really have to see these shows of Mother Nature first hand!

I hope you've enjoyed these pictures of Portsmouth NH - my treat to you on New Year's Day!!

Wishing all of us the very best in 2008 - health, happiness, peacefulness, prosperity, and joy!

Thanksgiving Tidbits, Trivia, and Fun!

Thanksgiving Dog and Cat
Did you know that Thanksgiving actually began in the United Kingdom, as their Harvest Festival? It was later brought to America by the early settlers, and from there it became a much more important holiday than it had been originally. The first celebration in America took place in Plymouth in 1621 by the Pilgrims, which was actually a form of the UK's Harvest Festival. The first official Thanksgiving was actually in the Virginia Colony on December 4, 1619. The first national Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed by George Washington and celebrated on November 26, 1789.

Take a trip with the Pilgrims and see how they made it to America, how they lived once they got here, and what their Thanksgiving feasts were like back in the 1600s.
