Cooking is the leading cause of fire injury among seniors.

stove Senior citizens have a higher risk than any other age group for home fire fatalities.

Some 900 adults 65 and older die from blazes each year, and another 2,000 are injured, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Seniors are more at risk for many reasons: less mobility, sight, just to name a couple.

Here are three safety tips to reduce the risk of a fire:

  • *When working at the stove, never leave flammable materials like potholders or paper towels nearby.
  • *Foods that are cooking should never be left unattended
  • The cook should always wear short or tight-fitting clothing, the USFA said.

*Be sure to have an escape plan. The plan should include two exits from each room. The USFA recommends letting your friends and/or family members know what your plan is. Practice with them if you can.

The majority of seniors killed in a fire were in their bedroom and many were sleeping, according to USFA Used fire alarm boxstatistics. Make sure your fire alarms are audible as they are more successful at waking you as most seniors have lost some hearing.

How many people have had access to your house in the last 5 years. How many spare keys do you think are out there?

I always advise my clients to change the locks on their doors as soon as possible. Top priority #1. This is a huge safety issue. A person never knows how many keys have been made to get into your home.

So stay safe and get your locks changed.

I saw a man stealing a trash can yesterday!

I have mainly lived in larger cities and have now been in Oak Ridge, TN for just over a year. Now people around here say Oak Ridge is not a small town and in comparison to the surrounding towns they are right.

pic3_06.gifI am still getting used to the small "tiffs" at the stop signs or who is going to let who go first. No, you go. No, you go. At Wal-Mart I find a lot of people making eye contact and smiling. My neighbors even wave!

Enjoying my morning coffee, I saw a man walking up our hill of a street pulling a trash can. I called to my fiance to point out a man is walking up the street with someone's trash can! He laughed. trash1-thumb.jpg

After his laughter subsided, he proceeded to inform me that is why we pay $5.00 per month extra on our utility bill. Our trash men carry a trash can door to door to pick up the trash then bring it out to the truck.

I have been here over a year now and it never actually registered that I have never seen a trash can on the side of the road!!!
