Newsweek recently published it's 2010 list of America's Best High Schools. Our local schools fared well on the list, giving us yet another reason northwest Arkansas is one of the most desirable destinations to live, work, and play! The list represents only 1,600 (or 6%) of our nation's best public schools based on performance in advanced-placement (AP) courses and tests. The article includes some interactive features and a profile for each school. Below are the rankings for the six area schools that made the list. The rankings put Har-Ber and Fayetteville in the top 2% nationally. Congratulations to the faculty & staff that make our schools such valuable institutions.
#411 Har-Ber High School(Springdale)
#448 Fayetteville High School
#589 Bentoville High School
#1148 Rogers High School
#1430 Springdale High School
#1574 Pea Ridge High School

It happens every year, and we should plan for it. But still, it's always a shock to realize that the Walmartians have invaded northwest Arkansas! That's right June 4, 2010, is the Annual Meeting for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which is based in Bentonville. The meeting is surrounded by days of events that draw shareholders from around the world. They descend on NWA, shop at our local Supercenters, take LOTS of photos, and spend LOTS of money.
From the effects of opening stores in small towns to various trade practices, the world's largest retailer gets a lot of negative criticism. However, as someone who lives a mere 20 miles from the Home Office, the impact I see locally is nothing but positive. Walmart contributes an estimated $8 Billion (yes, billion with a "b") to the Arkansas economy every year by purchasing Arkansas-made products and employs about 13,000 people in northwest Arkansas. On top of this there are millions of dollars invested in our communities through The Walmart Foundation, The Walton Family Foundation, and other charitable giving from Walmart's leadership team.
If you're not in NWA or don't have tickets, you can watch the shareholders' meeting online.
